Go into your FCP User prefs and change your audio playback quality to low. Minimize the number of audio tracks you have playing at one time on your timeline, render your audio (have you added effects to your audio?).

What do you mean when you say it “takes over my speakers”?
Does the audio “pop” at edit points or randomly throughout a single clip?
AIFF at 48K?
What are the audio settings of your timeline?

Check your system settings in FCP to ensure that your render files are also going to the same drive as your video capture. In this case, your Lacie.

I just went through exactly the same debate. Went with the 3.33 6 Core. It did not make any sense for me to buy today based on a hypothetical. Very happy with the choice.

Tons of options, you are correct. If you are in a hurry and want the easiest answer without all the experimentation how about just getting a Vimeo account. Upload your video there and then use the embed code on your page. They have all the specs you need to get the highest quality out of your video and the videos play on iPhone and iPad.

I think the best way to truly understand the FCP “white balance tool” so you can write a better Vetgas plug-in is to jump right into the the thick of it and open a clip in the version of FCP 7 you have installed on your computer at work and just apply that tool straight to a clip that needs a little white balancing. You will see immediately what so many have all known for so long and will be able to tweak that code you are developing to perfection. You will also have the added bonus of being able to show your superiors at Vegas that their money is well spent because you are willing to go that extra mile for the team by rolling up your sleeves and actually working with the tool you are working so hard to improve upon. Win-win. That FCP 7 /FCP X story is crazy, isn’t it? What an opportunity for you.
