This bit me last week. I was shooting 30p to match 2 Z1s on Tuesday, the day FCP was updated. Somebody emailed me to tell me about the FCP update while I was shooting, and I was like “Oh, awesome, I’ll be able to convert this easy and hand over”

Then I got home and realized there was no codec. VERY frustrating. Talk about bad luck.

Just as long as the F70 deck can deal with 23.98PsF HD-SDI input, I can’t see why this wouldn’t work. That’s the golden question though…it’s documented it can output PsF, but manual says nothing about input.

You’d lose a lot of nice features of XDCAM though, such as clips and such.

Sorry, missed the part about the deck. I would think the SD/SDI output of the deck would NOT be decimated to 4:1:1, so yes, if that’s true, it would be a good way. Just watch the detail setting on the SD output of the deck…there should be Low/Mid/High setting for that.

The SD output of the cameras is either DV 4:1:1 or composite, so that’s what I was recommending against.

Yes. If you shoot HD and downconvert correctly (to the correct format), you wind up with color resolution much better than 4:1:1, which is what you’d get if you shot DV25 mode on the F350.

The act of resizing a 1080p frame down in software (if done with care), nets a frame with much less compression artifacts and better color res.

The downside of course being that it’s a pain in the butt to do all this

I say this with all seriousness:

I think you should read the manual.

You need to select the clips you want to import. Apple-A for all.

[esp] “and at a significant lower price than the one mentioned above. “

2/3″ XDCAM HD at a price lower than $35,800 USD? Hrm. I suppose anything’s possible, but seems crazy to me.

If it’s not, then it’s the worst unmanaged rumor of 2006 for Sony Broadcast. The mentions have been so frequent and numerous that I can’t even cite any.

Of course they could do anything without having a press release in-hand…but the rumor *I* heard is saying a 2/3″ body for release in early 2007 for “$10k more”.

I’ve done a big job already with 7 F350s and post was cake. I feel the current cameras don’t make much sense on paper (data rates, chip size, etc), but in practical use they show their legs.

I think XDCAM HD will really pick up steam when the 2/3″ units finally show up. In the meantime, I think it’s a great in-between format, which the business sorely needed. I get my 350 on Friday!

I’ve heard of a firmware update that will give some nice additional functionality, but a higher bitrate was not one of them.

    That would be tremendous though.
