Problem solved. It was a combination of things. Once we realized the sync issue was NOT related to media (drifted on any type of media), we reinstalled Kona drivers, moved the card to another slot, and then went through the FCP settings again. Voila.

Update: Converting the .wav files to .aif is not fixing the problem. There’s something associated with these specific files that’s causing the problem. It’s only on this system. I’ve moved the project to two other systems without issue. Just this one setup. These .wav files were created from another editor’s FCP system. They are not broadcast wave files.

    So weird.

not .bwf or .bwav files. These are .wav files. Is it possible this is a reference issue?

Agreed Shane. There isn’t enough throughput on a firewire setup to handle the bandwidth required by 3 streams of DVCProHD. Add to that the fact there’s most likely motion effects applied (since it’s three streams we’re talking about), and it’s a lot for the computer to do. The demands only increase as you move up to 1080i.

Indeed the Aja GEN10 is a must if you need a reference source. Monitoring is a tricky issue as it really depends on what you’re doing. The Panasonic BT-LH1700 and BT-LH2600 make nice production monitors that include a waveform monitor and blue only for calibration. JVC and LaCie are cranking out some decent monitors these days too, although I’ve never been a big fan of either company. I also like Boland monitors as a generally flexible, large monitor that includes SDI out of the box and can be calibrated to be pretty accurate.

If you’re looking for something for color correction, the possibilities are endless, but the wallet usually dictates the level of investment. The other thing a lot of people overlook is your environment. Acoustic treatments, lighting conditions, background, client comfort, etc. all play a factor in the profitability of your business as do the ergonomics of your system. Consider a good desk, great chair and a comfortable couch with PS3 nearby for “render breaks”. And coffee…good coffee is a must.

    You’re right. Sorry.

G5 Dual 2.0GHz, 4.5GB RAM, XRAID 3.5TB, OS 10.4.2, QT7.0.1, K2 drivers 1.1.2, FCP 5.0.2. System uses a K2 card and but we tried a DeckLink HD just to test it and had same results.

Thank you for your prompt response. It is in SR mode and it is an SR tape. An audio track assigned from FCP as ch 6 would come up on the deck as ch. 2. FCP ch. 7=SR ch. 3. Clearly there’s an assignement issue in the deck because when we do it manually and just crash record to the deck it’s fine. It seems like FCP is just not communicating with the deck prpoerly as it’s not arming the correct channels. We got around the problem currently by setting a long preroll of about 12 seconds. Once the deck gets going and is locked, we pull the deck out of remote, arm tracks 5-8, then drop the deck back into remote all before the actual edit happens (wihtin the preroll). Surprisingly…this worked. Not too cool though. Immediate problem is solved, but long term? I’d like to know why this is happening. It’s an expensive rental so it’s difficult to get time on this deck to tinker.
