Hi, I am trying to get some help building my Final cut pro edit suite. I have several parts already: Mac pro 8 core, 10GB Ram, 30″ cinema display, AJA IOHD, 4TB Caldigit Raid, Mackie Audio monitors. Now I am just trying to find out what else I might need for editing SD and HD video? What kind of Genlock/Blackburst, TBC, Ref Monitor do I need what is the best route to take. I have been editing for 14 years and I am trying to start my own company.

    Thanks for any help

    Craig

For genlock, get an Aja Gen10. It will handle all of your SD & HD needs, NTSC & PAL. You may not need a TBC. There’s some basic proc amp features built into the Io control panel.

Indeed the Aja GEN10 is a must if you need a reference source. Monitoring is a tricky issue as it really depends on what you’re doing. The Panasonic BT-LH1700 and BT-LH2600 make nice production monitors that include a waveform monitor and blue only for calibration. JVC and LaCie are cranking out some decent monitors these days too, although I’ve never been a big fan of either company. I also like Boland monitors as a generally flexible, large monitor that includes SDI out of the box and can be calibrated to be pretty accurate.

If you’re looking for something for color correction, the possibilities are endless, but the wallet usually dictates the level of investment. The other thing a lot of people overlook is your environment. Acoustic treatments, lighting conditions, background, client comfort, etc. all play a factor in the profitability of your business as do the ergonomics of your system. Consider a good desk, great chair and a comfortable couch with PS3 nearby for “render breaks”. And coffee…good coffee is a must.
