Yes, that would actually be even better, but you have to make sure that you keep your applications and system files separate from that drive.

I actually use the Caviar Greens in RAID 0 and even for ProRes editing they seem to be just fine, but if I would be building a new system now, I would definitely choose the Caviar Black series or the more professional RE3, mainly because of improved speed.

Editing (especially in SD) with the Caviar Green drives should be OK, but I would much rather have the RE3 drives in the RAID. The reduced heat and noise just aren’t worth it.

Excellent sum up there. After a bit more research I was thinking of getting the ProFire 610 and the Genelec 8020b monitors, as they are just the right size and still within my price range. Do you suggest anything else for my video editing setup in terms of audio equipment or am I pretty much covered?

    Thanks,

Thanks so much for the response,

So I guess I will go for the Duet. But how can I connect the monitor to the Duet, if the monitor only has an XLR input? Go for a different monitor?

Looks good, I’ll be buying a very similar system in the next few weeks. Just try not to mix RAM sticks, use exactly the same ones in the system, as mixing them can result in problems.

Definitely use the external for editing, as using the same drive for editing and running applications, slows you down quite a bit. You will get much better performance editing on the external drive.

It would probably work in RAID (although many people say it’s not the best drive for it), I have the 1 TB version of that drive (not in RAID) and am very very happy with it, no problems whatsoever.

The RE4 is a tad high priced for 2 TB and for non-critical use the Caviar Black will work fine, just make sure to back everything up, as a RAID 0 array loses all data if just one of the drives fail.

For RAID you should really get the WD RE3 or RE4 drives, because they are much more reliable and also faster, exactly what you need for a RAID array. And yeah – don’t buy drives from Apple 🙂

I am also in the market for a new Mac pro and have pretty much decided on the 3.33 GHz 6-core Westmere, because neither FCP nor other apps can take advantage of 8 cores. Having 6 cores but also blistering clock speed is the “sweet spot” of Mac Pro processors if you ask me.

I don’t think the lack of more RAM slots on the 6-core is so substantial, as you can still get up to 16GB, which is enough for pretty much anything. Just don’t buy RAM from Apple please 🙂

    Thanks for the reply,

I once heard the M1 Active MKII and they sounded very neutral and clear, but the problem is my workspace isn’t really fit for monitors of that size, that’s why I’m leaning towards the smaller Genelecs, which I see are getting mixed opinions.

I was also looking at the Genelec 8020b combined with the M-Audio ProFire 610. Are the 8020b worth the extra price and how does the interface compare to the Duet?
