ProMAX is building me a new Mac Pro system and it looks great, but I do have a question on one item …

Included in the quote are (2) Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB WD10EARS Hard Drives. The intention with these is to combine them into a RAID 0 for all the video editing tasks.

After looking up the drives I see that they are 5400RPM. We are still shooting in SD, so we don’t need a ton of data throughput. But is the trade-off from 7200 down to 5400 worth the gains in lower heat output, less noise, and lower power consumption that are all trademarks of the Green series? Is 5400RPM in a RAID 0 going to be fast enough for our needs?

I actually use the Caviar Greens in RAID 0 and even for ProRes editing they seem to be just fine, but if I would be building a new system now, I would definitely choose the Caviar Black series or the more professional RE3, mainly because of improved speed.

Editing (especially in SD) with the Caviar Green drives should be OK, but I would much rather have the RE3 drives in the RAID. The reduced heat and noise just aren’t worth it.

Looks like we’re upgrading it to the Caviar Black drives, he did not realize the Greens were at 5400RPM.

Every test comparing the RE3 and the Caviar Black show them neck and neck (which is good). But I’m having a hard time finding out how the RE3 separates itself from the Caviar Black other than hearing that it is more “RAID friendly”.
