    [paapoopa] ”
so how do you link the parameters of the cards like size and rotation to other layers?”

    From within the plugin interface.

I’m not sure, but you should check a few things:

    a) Is your animated layer properly in a pre-comp? (it should be, or otherwise it may have no proper Alpha and cause problems)

    b) Is your particle rather large? (Particular might not display them because it runs out of memory for drawing the large particles)

    c) Does your particle show up when using other custom types (Split Clip etc.)? It could well be that you simply don’t see particles because the layer is blank at some point and Particular will sample it there.

    d) Is your particle long enough (see c) for reason)?

Yepp, Card dance allows you to link the parameters of the “cards” like size and rotation to other layers. It’s a bit difficult to grasp the concept, but very powerful once you learn how to use it.

    [alon_a] “Here’s one way, with a plugin:

    https://www.digitalanarchy.com/toolbox/toolbox_sampler.html

This lets you sample the color at a given coordinate; once you have that, it’s pretty straightforward to connect it to other stuff like a circle’s radius. To get the effect in the video you’d have to apply this multiple times at various points in an array.

    – AA”

Na, way to convoluted. Such a setup would take forever, especially since you have to “bake” out the color sampler first. I think you’d agree that my suggestion is much simpler and much more efficient.

[linkoping skrills] “how did they conect the luma values of their source to the circles?”

No “linking” as you may understand it at all. I’d say circles tiled as a grid using Motion Tile, then Card Dance parameters driven by another layer. Pretty simple.

  • [sebastien] “Perhaps there is other ways to solve this effect ?”

Not really. The only other option I see is using text (dots and dashes) but similarly they are dependent on accessing the mask data and you woulkd also need acccesss to the advanced text properties (such as spcing in true world pixel units), which AE also doesn’t provide. The cleanest way I can think of would be using Illustrator with a batch action to auto-trace the contours, apply a dashed stroke (which unlike with Vegas is independent from the actual layer size) and then convert that stroke to contours. Those images could then be used in AE.
