    Well, if you search the web for “timeslice” and “bullet time”, you will find enough info on how it is done best and indeed it involves a lot of 3D in many cases. If the duration of the shot is not too long, having your actors hold still is of course an option, but it’s never going to be 100% perfect. Several episodes of the various Star Trek series used this (holodeck episodes for instance).

    No, it won’t. Sorry, can’t avoid that and it’s not going to get better with newer versions…

    Nope, absolutely no conditional stuff required. You only measure the distance between places and then use this to drive rotation. Example:

    range=100; //range when rotation begins
    center=thisComp.width*0.5; //center of comp on X axis
    distance=position[0]-center;

    angle=linear(center+distance;center+range,center-range,90,-90);

    [Will Martindale] “i plan to film them with instruments but i can see aquiring a drum kit will be a problem.”

    Umm, really? I live in a 3000 people small village and know where I could get one anytime. So assuming you are in a much bigger city, you are sure to find one and rent it for a day. Unless you are planning on some exotic SciFi-look and are dependent on the CG, I’d try a more conventional approach. The matchmoving for integrating the CG could cost you much more time and turn out to be a test of patience…

    Nope, not with AE and not even with most other standard tools. In most cases you need to register with the DRM system manufacturer to get your unique identification and encryption key and use their dedicated tools.

  • [shroomly] “so is there any way to take all 4 masks and combine them?”

    No. This is AE, not Illustrator. ;O) Like Tony said, split the letters to separate layers.

    I guess it’s one of those “How real do you want it?” questions. A good place to start would be downloading the demo version of Trapcode’s Particular along with the PyroPack and try some of the presets. You can create a ring by defining the shape in a pre-comp and then using it as a layer/ layer grid emitter. Also the Flame effect in Tinderbox 4 is quite good, but it is really more meant for candles and torches. particleIllusion has a ton of usable fire presets, but it’s of course an external program. Lastly, look into how you can create the effect with AE’s own tools. Fractal Noise combined with the Tint effect or Colorama and bent into place using Bezier Warp can look quite okay and you don’t need to spend any extra money…

    March 9, 2007 at 10:40 am in reply to: Smoke Text Question – Not in FAQ section of forum

    Sounds more or less like a simple matter of finding the right font/ typeface. Not sure what look you have in mind, but for a nice, pleasant look probably a Gothic type with thin fine lines or a script font would look best. You then only need to overlay it onto your existing smoke using Add or Screen blend mode and take down opacity until it begins to meld with the smoke. A slight blur mikght also help. If you are looking for the opposite and want to cretae the feeling of smoking being bad (which it is of course) use heavy fonts and use darker colors or aggressive blendmodes such as Difference for instance.

    For the smoke itself simply create a hollow circle as a custom particle, feather/ blur it slightly, take down the opacity until it is barely visible and use as a custom particle in Particular. Use the Add mode, so when the particles overlap the strings of smoke will begin to manifest themselves. For the motion turn down velocity and work with a negative Gravity and Turbulence.

    No. But I don’t see your problem. Why not simply split the layer at the right point and remove the expression?

    No, the behavior is normal. Chapter menues only define the entry points. you would need advanced scripting to also control the exit behavior of chapter markers and Encore doesn’t support this. If you really need to re-create it somehow, use chapter playlists that contain only the one chapter in question and set the playlists end action to return to the menu.
