  • how to combine several masks (on one layer) into a single mask? AE7

    hya everyone.

just wanted to know if its at all possible to combine a number of masks to create one mask. What im trying to do is take the word LOVE (for example) which is split onto 4 masks (L/O/V/E) and add the waveform effect. the problem is that it asks for a mask, and i cant choose all the masks at once.

When i add the same effect 4 times, only one masked effect can be seen at any given time…

so is there any way to take all 4 masks and combine them? or if not, is there a way to import the word (thru illustrator maybe) as a single mask?

thanks a lot for the help.

    shroomly.

Not sure how the waveform effect works but you could split the masks out to four layers.

Take the layer you have now, add the effect to the L mask, get the settings as you like, rename this layer L, duplicate the layer three times, name the next layer O and change the mask that the waveform effect uses to the O mask, and so on down the line.

If you like you could parent and link the effect controls of the O,V,E layers to the L layer so that you only need to change one layer to control them all.

No. This is AE, not Illustrator. ;O) Like Tony said, split the letters to separate layers.

you can’t combine LOVE in Illustrator either. You’d end up with one mask for L, V, and E and 2 for O…

I’d suggest that you adjust the kerning so that the letters overlap, then auto trace them to create a new mask and use that.

Combining masks from the same layer into one mask.

Method – combing path data from both masks and turning them into a single position path
that is recombined into a single mask.

    1. make a very small solid layer in your comp.

    2. first mask – click onto words ‘mask path’
    edit/copy

    3. be on frame 0 – on your very small solid layer goto position and paste.
a new position path in the shape of your first mask appears.

    4. 2nd mask – click on words ‘mask path’
    edit copy

    5. goto a few frames past the last keyframe of the newly created position path on your
very small solid layer then goto position and paste.

a new position path in the shape of your second mask appears – it should already be linked
    to the first position path

    6. click on position path and edit/copy

    7. on same layer as your original paths that you are combining make a single point mask.

    8. click on ‘mask path’ and paste. This is your combined mask.
