Am I the only one that noticed that Apple released a bunch of new software yesterday that REQUIRES QuickTime 7.2? As of yesterday, 7.2 support is no longer an option… Panasonic needs to get cracking on this…

That’s true, but unless they’ve changed the design, they still share one controller chip. While it’s true many of us have seen it work, it’s still overall slower than say a second firewire card or cardbus version…

This morning they released a special version for the Xserve that doesn’t use one of the PCI expansion slots… that should help speed up file transfers and backups as well…

I can see why someone may choose to work that way, but why would you want to be bound to that? With edit-ready you could still execute a backup before working with your footage, but you don’t have to. With the FCP implementation, you HAVE to. Seems very limiting, and unnecessarily so.”
Barry, I tend to agree with Shane on this one. I don’t see that as unnecessary or a duplication of efforts. I copy all the MXF files to a HD as a matter of course… usually during shooting. When I attach that HD to the Mac and FCP ingests the files to the Disk Array. This is no different than copying them to any disk array.
Either way, I have the files to edit with and the original HD (with MXF) goes into archive. One way I do it before editing, and with your way I do it after. Obviously, I’m missing your point somehere… or we’re arguing semantics…

[Barry Green] “The point isn’t that you shouldn’t use FCP. The point was that you don’t have to put up with that limited import window that frequently doesn’t work. You can have your cake and eat it too. Use FCP all you want, just don’t use its log & transfer function — use Raylight or P2 Log instead. Either will get around all the issues that FCP’s import window exhibits.”
I’d be interested in hearing what limitations you’ve discovered. I use it every single day without any issues (it’s never failed to work) and fail to see any limitations.
Raylight looks interesting, but we could never edit off the card, since we use multiple cards on every shoot, so we still need to copy to the HD. I see an advantage to having someone else do that during the shoot.
I also use HDlog. Is P2 log trustworty at this point? There were some issues with it earlier…

I only shoot 60i when a client insists, to match other cameras. If we aren’t shooting in 24p, then it’s 30p and has been since the DVX was released.

If you’ve been offloading your footage to hard drives throughout the production day, every other editor lets you plug in that drive and edit. Only FCP requires that you import/ingest.”
Perhaps, but no other editor has ProRes 422. The more I work with it, the more anmazed I am with it.

Hasn’t helped. We tried Safari 3, it kept crashing on a new Intel MBP. The machine also opens the applications window every time we power up the machine, which it never did before. Nothing can get rid of that. Of course, all the other issues with other programs reported in 3 still remain…
Removing 3 and going back to 2 does not eliminate that window opening. The autofill option also no longer works, so we have to type everything in manually in web forms now. Nice.
