Lively posting in FCP forum – 30P Revolution!
Posted by Tom Brooks on August 1, 2007 at 10:02 pmThere’s a 30P uprising happening in the FCP forum. Some people are swearing never to shoot 60i again unless they have to. I’m trying to hold them back at the gates, but I can’t do it alone. Is anybody with me? Barry Green, help!!!!

August 1, 2007 at 10:04 pmI don’t ever want to work with interlaced footage again. LCD and Plasma TVs are getting big, and they are not interlaced. Interlacing is SO yesterday. Made because of CRT displays.
The motion is too smooth…we don’t want that. That is one of the BIG reasons for so many people wanting the film look. EVERYONE it seems who posts for the first time asks “How do I get the film look?” No one wants interlaced…everyone wants progressive. We all like how film looks.

August 1, 2007 at 10:06 pmHey, I’m all for the eradication of 60i as soon as possible! 720/60p for HD beats 1080/60i all day long.
But 30p? Odd choice. Hey, if people like it, there’s nothing actually wrong with it, it just limits your post options — you can’t reasonably transfer 30p to film or to PAL format. But short of that, it’s a sort of hybrid film/video look.

As I mentioned in the great thread Tom referred to, we are working with 30p on this Discovery series because we are delivering an NTSC master on digibeta. We want the progressive “film look,” but are delivering a 29.97 master. We don’t want to complicate things by shooting and editing 23.98 when we won’t be delivering in that format at all. No film, no HD…SD only. Shooting with Panasonic DVCPRO 50 cameras and HVX-200.
It all boils down to what you are delivering…that determines what you are shooting.

August 2, 2007 at 9:00 amI’m working with 1080p30 as it makes tracking and green screen work a lot easier.
No more interlacing for me. It’s a technological answer to a problem with slow CRT’s from the 1940’s and no longer relevant.

August 2, 2007 at 2:35 pmI only shoot 60i when a client insists, to match other cameras. If we aren’t shooting in 24p, then it’s 30p and has been since the DVX was released.
