This was a major problem in earlier versions of X. Steve Martin and I discussed it last year at the SuperMeet.

For no apparent reason, playback would occasionally blare (peak). I’d hit the space bar to stop… move the playhead… hit the space bar and it would playback perfectly. Drove me crazy!

It was repeatable on far too regular of a basis. I showed it to at least half a dozen people.

The good news is… I haven’t seen it recently with the new version… so NO, you’re not crazy. Upgrade and get past it…

I’d say the 8-core is the current-gen sweet spot if you can afford it. Otherwise the 6-core. The D700 are a given to me as well as at least 32 GB of RAM (we went with 64).”

To me the ram, the SSD and the GPU’s were clear. The tough decision was the cores.

To me, the decision wasn’t between 8 or 12, it was between 6 or 8. In the end I went with the 8. It really is the sweet spot. So few programs can use 12 cores, and if they can’t, it’s the slowest in the bunch…

Played with it a bit yesterday… I can definitely see it as a huge time saver. It’s also nice to have Sonicfire back… that was one of the things I hated losing when we went to X…

At first blush it does seem a bit odd on something that can run as much as $9k+. Stepping back it’s clear that Apple has adopted the “universal port” thought process. Pretty much everything is relegated to either TB2 or USB. While it might have been more convenient, given the spate of really good XLR-USB adapters out there (we probably all own one) it really isn’t an issue.

To me the surprising part is no built in Mic. If I’m a self-absorbed Facebook using narcissist, how am I supposed to subject the world to my constant stream of unimportant thoughts?

Had my first Mac 30 years ago. Had my first Lisa2 two years before the Mac…

Had the same experience that others have had. In 1982 my partners and I were about to buy a networked Burroughs mini system for $50K for the business. Walked into a computer store and saw the Lisa2 with the graphical interface. Was blown away. It could open all the programs simultaneously… something the Mac couldn’t do until three years after it’s debut.

We bought five Lisa2 systems. I used that leverage to con them into selling me the LaserWriter that was on allocation for a store still under construction at the time. So, I had the first Laser printer here in our state (western region actually) for the bargain price of $7995. Back then they sold you a roll of wire and all the connectors, that we ran through the ceiling and soldered connectors on to network the LaserWriter to the Lisa2’s. Star Trek kinda stuff in those days.

I remember that three of the Lisa2’s had internal 10MB hard drives. Yes MB. Someone told us that we were being ridiculous, because we would never be able to fill that hard drive in our lifetime! Reminds me of the guy that said everything that could be invented had already been invented so we could close the patent office. Of course, back then most IBM PC’s were still booting from floppies, so you could understand how someone could think that.

Apple had an office here, that was across the street from us. We were unaware of their location until they started bringing people over to show them our LaserWriter and networked Lisa2’s… because they didn’t have a LaserWriter yet!

A lot has changed since then, as I type this on a MacBook Air… and await my new MacPro.

I’ve always heard that USB is no good either, and USB and Macs up until this point has been a pretty dubious connection. The intel USB3 implementation seems to be pretty good, fast, and different than shitty Apple USB2.

I’ve been testing it with mobile editing on a new laptop, and it does just fine with 1080 to 4k ProRes/XAVC.”

That stems back to the way USB was initially designed. Using an oversimplification, USB moved data in “Buckets” while FW was a continuous stream. That’s why FW was preferred. Anyone using early USB drives experienced the inconsistent delivery of higher demands of video. Great for backing up files though.

Obviously USB has improved, and USB3 is seriously useful. Being bi-directional (as Lance pointed out) is just one of the reasons…
