I mainly use the Kensington Expert Mouse but I also have some older Logitech thumb trackball to take around. The real solution for me though is to use keyboard shortcuts as much as possible.

Even if the lab doesn’t keep records of what keykode corresponds to what timecode there is usually a punch hole at the head of each cam roll. So for retransfer an EDL and the list of punch holes is enough.

One of the actual tasks I use EDL’s for is “pulling” shots. I cut two features shot on Arri D-21. The footage comes on a bunch of hard drives with hundreds of thousands DPX files on them. I like to call it “digital negative”. I strike “digital workprint” from the footage — QT movies with timecode, a LUT and metadata burned in, log, sync and edit. When picture is locked I have to pass it to a colorist and to VFX. That means going back to DPX. That’s where EDL’s come handy. DPX contains timecode in the header and there is a Spotlight plugin that allows searching for timecode. Of course it would be much easier to have a small app that would import EDL, search all mounted volumes and copy only the frames used to a specified location but doing it manually isn’t as bad as it sounds. In fact Pomfort was considering having this feature in the next Silverstack and even had working code but it didn’t make it into a final release.

Twenty minutes is about enough for anybody who’s been editing full time to realize that FCPX is totally screwed up. I’ve read enough posts on this forum to see that most people finding FCPX easier to work with than FCP or MC are either casual editors or people who have the luxury to work under very little pressure. In my opinion anybody finding original FCP interface complicated should get less demanding job and stop waisting clients’ time and money.
I made this post extremely rude on purpose. I’m fed up with this all this arrogant “creative power to the people” bullshit. If you want to say “You’re a bunch of insecure old farts so shut up” have the courage to say so. There are better chances for creativity in strong and direct language than in heaps of second hand banalities.

Depends on how accurate is your database. Yu should check every clip in it by comparing burn-in to the numbers your logged a few frames from the beginning, in the middle and a few frames before the end.

In FCP7 you decide between insert or overwrite the moment you make the edit. It doesn’t default to either.
