I agree, and in fact I strangely found this to be true even with footage shot on DVcam. (In my case, captured 8 bit uncompressed via AJA IoLA box).

Thanks again – I think I have Snapzpro so I’ll try that. Weird that Cleaner lets me make Real files, but not convert them!

Thanks for the response. I’m trying to track down another file format or tape, but cannot count on it happening by my deadline. And yes, I have the rights to use it. Fortuantely the Real file is rather high quality, so it will do in a pinch, if I can convert it.

I just asked AJA about IoLA & FCP 6 compatibility. The response was:

“The IoLa should work fine with FCP 6. You will need to use Io driver V3
located on our website under support>software downloads.”

Wayne – No offense intended, but I think that response might little harsh. There’s hardly any question on the Cow that couldn’t be answered some other way, through reading a manual, help file, by calling the company who makes the product, or by persistant trial-and-error testing. People post to the Cow because they are hoping for a quick, accurate response from knowledgeable people, which is exactly what jbrad2 got. I think your assumption regarding his video experience comes off a little holier-than-thou, if not mean-spirited. Again, no offense intended, I read this forum a lot, and I know you are a frequent & knowledgable contributor, I just think in this case you should lighten up a bit on the guy. (or girl). His question was valid, and by no means basic.

May 7, 2007 at 3:57 pm in reply to: Muxing with MPEG Streamclip: quality loss?

    >>You can produce a muxed file directly in Compressor.
    >>In the Inspector, in the Extras Tab (with your MPEG-2 Preset selected) select Multiplexed MPEG-1 Layer2 audio (creates an MPEG-2 Transport Stream with multiplexed audio). Note the audio is encoded to MPEG, so there can be small quality loss there, but thats what the format requires.

A word of caution on this – some on-air systems with older decoder cards (like the one at our station) cannot play back a muxed Trasnport Stream file, only Program Stream.

The good news: With the new version of Compressor coming this month, you will be able to make both a muxed Transport or Program stream MPEG-2 file, eliminating the need for MPEG Streamclip altogether.

I’m going to this event, although I have to admit I have no idea what to expect. On the website it says details will be announced soon, but can someone just give me a brief idea of the scope of the event? Is it presentations, meet & greet, training, tips? All of the above?

    thanks

Compressor does have the capability of making a muxed (audio + video together) MPEG-2 file. From the “Setting” list, select “New Default Setting >> MPEG-2”. Then double click the setting so that the Inspector window opens. Click the “Encoder” button (2nd one from left), and then select the “Extras” tab. Check the Multiplexed MPEG-1/Layer 2 Audio” box. Close the Inspector, and then hit the submit button.

A word of caution – This creates a Transport stream file, which not all decoder cards can read back. (Our 7 year old card cannot, and so we are in the process of buying one that can). Some cards (like ours) can only read Program stream files. If this is the case, you need to render out separate video & audio files, as you would for making a DVD, and then mux them together using software like MPEG Streamclip. This second step is very quick – for me it only takes about 30 seconds for a 30 minute show

    Good luck

If you are flying into Vegas, consider going on Southwest Airlines, because on their website they have “vacation” packages combining airfare & hotel, which really can cut down the overall cost.

    >>Check the Preview with Square Pixels option in the Preview menu, that might be the culprit.

That did the trick – thanks!

    >>Sorry, preview to monitor is only available from the keyframer because when you use Graffiti as plugin FCP still has control of the I/O and won’t pass it to a plugin.

    Bummer
