I have pretty much solved the problem of shutting down. Even with upgrades to cpu coolers it still seemed to overheat on occasion. I had to pull the pc out of the side cupboard of the desk it was sitting in and it never overheats now. The main problem after the cpu heatsink being upgraded was PP simply locking up. Seemed to be a result of the footage and export settings. Also, I was shooting in a VBR and once I changed to a CBR it renders nearly every time. It seems 90% of my problems were from footage and the other 10% was from export settings. It looks like PP CS4 supports the avchd so that would make things even smoother without having to conform the video. Let me know if you have any questions and hopefully I can give you an answer.

Thanks for suggesting the CBR. It works much better. I can export to dvd and encore without problems. I still am having troubles exporting to, say, ipod. When I export to dvd I choose CBR 6Mbps and I set my audio to mpeg (my source footage is mpeg-1, layer 2) and set the kbps at 384 (also my source kbps). It seems to crash if the audio settings are on PCM. Do I always need to match the source footage while exporting? Any ideas why it will not render out with ipod preset? It just locks up.

I run Vista Ultimate 64bit with Production Premium CS3. The only problems I have seem to be wrong settings in the software I ignorantly pick. I have 6gb of memory with a quadcore and I am loving it.

Thanks for the brainstorming. The audio settings were indeed not right. My camera has 3 modes of recording: “FHD” 1920x1080i with VBR, SP mode is 1440x1080i with CBR and finally 1440CBR is obviously 1440x1080i with CBR. I use the SP with VBR. Do you recommend the 1440 with CBR? What is the advantage of VBR or CBR?

I am using speedfan and the cpu is 35c idle. it never goes above 60 under load. I have tried keeping the case open and a fan blowing on it to help too…still shuts down.

The Phenom is an AMD quadcore processor. I built the pc myself…the only thing i do on it is run production premium. What do you mean by “Also…what exactly is your conversion workflow? MPEG is not all the same and once you move to editing, there are certain types of MPEG that are handled better than others.” The properties of the file in premiere says:

    File Path: C:\MyWorks\0831-1.mpg
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 2.6 GB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 1440
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz – compressed – Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz – 32 bit floating point – Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;19;11;04
Average Data Rate: 2.3 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.333

I have a project with HDV 1080i60 preset with the exception of changing the fields to lower. I have tried upper too and no luck. I almost think it is cooling too but this cooler i bought dropped it nearly 20c from the manufacturer’s cpu cooler shipped with the cpu. Thanks for the help.

I have made sure my project settings and field order is the same as my footage. I use a lot of generated footage from after effects too. But I cannot even render out the mpeg’s by themselves without a crash

Yeah I have a cpu temp monitor. It is not even going above 60celcius. I also checked my motherboard settings to make sure the auto-shutdown temp isn’t too low. It is set at 80celcius.

Thanks for the detailed post. That did exactly what I needed it to do.

I’ll try to strectch the footage and see how it plays on DVD. Why do you suppose I can’t play the HD comp without smoothness? I have a quadcore/4gb memory/ geforce 9800. HDD too slow? I thought about purchasing a raptor drive but not sure if it would help. I guess I don’t realize how demanding multiple HD streams are. Thanks for the help though. I can at least get my project finished now.
