Looking at your needs, it sounds like Vegas might be overkill for you. I’d suggest it’s “baby brother”, Vegas MovieStudio+DVD.
The software was just updated for the new version and, among it’s new features is the ability to import video from DVD camcorders, something Vegas can’t do easily.
This takes care of the MPEG-2 editing question you aked in another thread. -
I really don’t know what to say as the few times I’ve rendered out in QT format, I just use the default settings (other than the 2 changes I mentioned at the beginning).
As far as audio goes, I looked in my format box and I have 13 choices, not just qualcomm purevoice.
With some of the other settings, click the ? symbol at the tob and then click the option you’re interested in (such as Natural). Most of the time, it’ll pop up an explanation.

It’s all part of selecting the “Custom” options for rendering.
After choosing QT as your “save as” type, click on the the “Custom – Video” tabs. In here, select the desired frame size and frame rate. Then go to the “Video format” box. I’ve been told to select the “Sorenson Video 3” option as it’s the cleanest for QT movies. Now you should be able to make these adjustments. Set the “Data Rate” to “Unconstrained”. The “Keyframe” setting is at the bottom of this area.
You can also switch over to the “Audio” tab and make adjustments there if desired.
These settings can be saved as a preset if desired by entering a name in the “Template” box at the top of the tab and clicking the floppy disc icon.

Try setting the keyframe to 300.

Go right ahead. It’s no different than copying files to/from a CD, jump drive, etc. All you’re doing is copying data so there’s no loss whatsoever. Just make sure to do a Copy and not a Move just in case something gets messed up. Always verify that the copy works before deleting the original.

Maybe I have not assigned them right.
Looking at where some of your files are (I/documents and settings/steve edwards/my documents), I get that impression too.
Options > Prefs > General. At the bottom of this tab is the Temporary Files folder location. Browse to the appropriate location.
And in the Capture window, it’s Options > Prefs > Disk Management. The only gotcha here is that this setting has to be changed for each new project as it defaults to the lst used folder. And yes, Sony has been asked repeatedly to fix this 🙁
I also wonder why you have Vegas on something other than a system drive. With 3 drives, the practice usually is #1 – system drive, #2 – capture drive & #3 – edited masters. You’ll find that renders go faster this way as well.
Bottom line in all of this is that you need to practice project management. I do this all the time at the college I work at where we may have as many as 20 different student projects on one machine. Project management is the only thing that keeps me sane 🙂
Get into the habit of creating a new folder for each and every project you do. Inside of this folder, put other folders like Vegs, Video clips, Music, Graphics, etc. When you start a new project, call it something like MyVideo01.veg and save it to the MyVideo/Vegs folder. Then, every time you make major changes to your project, do a “Save As” and call it MyVideo02.veg, MyVideo03.veg and so on. This way, if you have any problems, you haven’t lost an entire project.

Bingo!! Anytime you try to render to or from anything other than a DV-AVI file, your render times increase, in some cases quite substantially as you’ve discovered.

My only (minor) complaint with the Bella keyboard is that the jog/shuttle wheel is a bit small for the average adult-sized hand.
Then again, I was used to using the jog/shuttle controllers on broadcast gear so I got spoiled 🙂
