Click the Custom button next to the Template window.
Then click the Video tab and look at the Aspect Ratio box. It should say 16:9 🙂 -

Did you use the 320×240 or the 640×480 (only for newer iPods) template?
I’ve done this several times for my wife’s iPod (320 x240) and it’s always worked for her. -
Vegas 6 has this as a render option.
I’m not at my computer right now or I’d be able to tell you exactly where it is. -

No real disadvantage in doing it that way. I just prefer to do it from Vegas as I can specify CBR or VBR, single or 2-pass, etc.
In other words, I’m in control of the final result and not a computer 🙂 -
Even if you were to feed DVDA an AVI file, it still has to be encoded as an MPEG-2 stream for DVD creation.
A lot of us prefer to feed it an already rendered file.
In your case, for a 2 hr. video, the bitrate calculator I use says a CBR of 4,700,000 or a VBR of 8,000,000, 4,700,000, 2,800,000.
Keep in mind what Gary said about DVDA reporting things wrongly. This has been a complaint since it was introduced 🙁
If I know that my MPEG-2/AC-3 streams are under the allowable limit, I just ignore the warning. -
Chroma key is the technique you’re looking for.
Do a search here as this has been discussed numerous times so you’ll find lots of suggestion. -
You’ve said that you’re not happy with the capture results with either box so my recommendation for the Canopus ADVC-110 still stands.
If you only need to get the video into the computer, then the ADVC-55 would fill your needs.
The other decent box is the ADS PYRO A /V Link .
Any of these boxes will do an excellent job of converting footage from your HI-8 or VHS into a digital signal for further editing.BTW, you can tell MovieMaker to capture video in the DV-AVI format instead of WMV. I know it’s an option somewhere as I’ve done it before.

Just get a basic firewire card ($25 or less) for capturing and you won’t have any more problems. You’ll end up with NTSC (or PAL, as the case may be) DV-AVI footage which Vegas deals with extremely well.
If you want to capture analog video (from VHS, for example) either use the pass-through feature of your miniDV camcorder (if it has it) or get a box like the Canopus ADVC-110. -
Change your preview screen mode to Preview/Auto (odds are it’s set to Best/Full) and you should see an improvement.
