  • captured still looks smaller after rendering…

Posted by Jerry Neal on May 21, 2007 at 12:46 am

I captured a still (16:9) from a video clip on my timeline. I then placed the still in my video and rendered to a HD 720P Windows Media File. However, after being rendered, the still appears smaller (the size of the whole clip is smaller) in the rendered video but it looks fine when previewed on my timeline. Any reason for this difference?

Try opening Pan/Crop on the still and selecting Match Aspect Ratio.

That should read Match Output Aspect.

    1. I found the source “keep aspect ratio” but could not find output – Where is it ?
    2. In Hi-Def 1080i-50 render template (which generates m2t files) the video is defined as 1440X1080i – That is 4:3 format. How do I get template for the 16:9 and still get m2t files ?

“1. I found the source “keep aspect ratio” but could not find output – Where is it ?

Open Pan/Crop, right-click and select Match Output Aspect.

Click the Custom button next to the Template window.
Then click the Video tab and look at the Aspect Ratio box. It should say 16:9 🙂

    Mike,
    Re: Hi-Def
I am confused – The teplate does say 16:9 aspect ratio but on the other hand the video stream is still defined on the template as 1440X1080 (4:3) – well ?
The whole issue came aboard when I mix, on the time line, Hi-Def 1080-50i video with 16:9 stills. It looks good while playing on the time line but when I render it (using the HDV 1080-50i template) the stills are coming stertched in the vertical axis (IE “long heads”). BTW my stills are 2848X1602 – 16:9.
    Please advise,
    Reg,
    Joe

Try doing a Match Aspect Ratio on the stills and see if it helps.

I guess you mean “match output aspect” (since there is also an option of “match source aspect”) – Well, I’ve tried and it does not help.

“I guess you mean “match output aspect””

Sorry about that. Yes I did mean that.

One thought just occurred to me and that is how are you watching the video? If it’s with Media Player, it’s a known fact that it can sometimes have issues properly displaying widescreen/16:9 video.

Well, I open it in Uleads Video Capture application. Since I thought it might be just a “view” type of problem, I captured there a JPEG photo and printed it out but I’m getting the same distorted faces.
As I mentioned before, I still do not understand how HDV 1080-50i format template – which to my understanding is 1440X1080 – IE 4:3 – can “live with” stills which are 2848X1602 – IE 16:9 – W/O getting the stills distorted ?

Vegas automatically scales anything (up or down) added to a project to match the project settings. If you were to add a PAL miniDV clip to the timeline, it would scale your 720 x 576 clip to match the HDV 1080-50i format template. The same thing happens with stills, even if they’re larger than the project properties.

    …HDV 1080-50i format template – which to my understanding is 1440X1080 – IE 4:3 …

It really is 16:9. Take a look at the clip properties and, beside Pixel aspect, it says 1.3333 (HDV 1080). This is the “magic” key. The 1440 x 1080 image is stretched to be 1920 x 1080 (16:9) when displayed.

I’m really not sure why you’re having problems. I downloaded an HDV 1080-50i clip, dropped it on a timeline and set the project properties to match. I extracted a still from this video clip and stuck it ion the middle. I then rendered it out, just like you did, to a HD 720P Windows Media File and everything looked the way it was supposed to be. No stretched images anywhere on the timeline or in the rendered video.
