What version of QuickTime player do you have installed on your computer?
Can you have the file sent to you in a different format such as MXF?

I like MXF (as does Vegas) but without knowing any more details, it’s hard to pick one over another.
What format is the original video?

I noticed dvdvideosoft in the comment line. My success in importing videos that utility produces ranges from slim to none 🙁
You said that you got it from someone. If at all possible, have them send you the original file and not a converted one.

Place a marker at the halfway point and highlight the desired portion. When you go to render, make sure you have Render loop region only selected.

To quote John Rofrano from a recent thread on the same issue:

DVD only has 1/6th the information as HD. It pales in comparison. At 720×480 it’s barely 1/3 megapixel! 345,600. Compare that to 1920×1080 which is 2,073,600 over 2 megapixel and it’s pretty obvious why it isn’t as sharp (i.e., 0.3 MP vs 2.1 MP) As Mike said, HD has 6x the information of SD.

You can add a Sharpen FX on the Master Video bus if you want to sharpen it a bit but you just don’t have enough pixels to show the details you’re seeing on the timeline in Vegas.

Jeff, I’ve heard the same thing but according to the Sony Knowledgebase we’re still ok. Mind you, this is a few years old but you’d expect it to still be current.

What is the policy for installing and registering a Sony Creative Software program on multiple computers?

According the Sony Creative Software End User License Agreement, there is no restriction for installing or re-installing the software on multiple computers. Many users need to have the software installed on more than one computer (i.e., a home PC, a work PC, and a portable laptop) for the convenience of being able to work on projects at different locations. Our EULA allows for this type of use and only the purchase of a single license is required to do so.

If multiple, simultaneous use is needed, then according to the EULA purchase of multiple licenses will be required (i.e., a classroom or a business with multiple people using the same program at one time).

Each time the software is installed, it may be installed using the installation disc or by downloading directly from our Updates page.
Reinstalling requires that you enter the serial number provided with your ordered materials.
There is no need to de-activate or de-authorize your software when you are installing on a new computer.
The software should be registered using the same contact and user information each time it is registered.
