I know you can send audio that far without problem if it’s balanced… The problem will be the video signal.

well depends on how the footage looks, but is it possible to work with layers?
As in duplicating the clip, make it black and white, use the color clip over and add a mask around everything but the strawberrys and make that transparent.

You can easily do that with motion, but it might be time consuming if you got a long clip.
Well, it’s how accurate you make the mask that’s consuming.

Yes, quicktime can play it.
I told him that aswell.

But can AVID on the PC play it aswell?
If you install latest version of quicktime for PC, does the AVID application get access to the QT codecs?

I don’t own any PC so I have no clue how that works.

Dont know what the best tools for PC are, a quick search on versiontracker.com with the keyword “VOB”
gave me “Allok Video Splitter” among the results, it seems to be able to do the trick.

By using the Avid DV codec you will have a slight quality loss compared to the mpeg2 on the movie, since it’s not a lossless encoder.

it all depends on what DVD it is.

If it’s the retail Shrek 2 it’s both copy (Macrovision/CSS) and region protected,
that require a decryption of the copy protection, loads of apps for that.

if it’s a home movie burnt on a DVD then it’s most likely unprotected,

Then, on the DVD the movie and sound itself is baked into .VOB files.

VOB stands for DVD Video Object. It is basically one of the core files found on DVD-Video discs and contains the actual movie data.

Basically VOB file is just a basic MPEG-2 system stream – meaning that it is a file that contains multiplexed MPEG-2 video stream, audio streams (normally AC3 format) and subtitle streams.

What you need to do is process the .VOB files with another app that subtracts the movie, the sound and the subtitles into different files.

What you have to do then is transcode your mpeg2 stream into a codec your editor can understand. Depending on what codec you use this is gonna be a quality loss, unless you choose a lossless one, like BitJazz or Microcosm.

Then you need to do the same with the audio unless it’s in aiff format.
