DVCPro 50 in FCP 5 HD?
I’m gonna shoot some footage with a Panasonic DVCPro 50 camera. And then I want to edit it on my quad G5 using FCP 5 HD.
I wonder if anyone have any suggestions on the workflow? I never edited DVCPro 50 in FCP before, but I want to use it for the neat integration with other apple apps, all my effects and cause it’s my NLE of choice!
When i’ve shot DVCPro 50 before I have captured it with My Media 100 8.2.3 FX system and the SDI-Lossless option.
I have a DVCPro 50 camcorder hooked up with SDI to the media 100.I don’t have any hardware card to my FCP station, but if I capture it using media100 and transfer it on lacie FW800 drives to my FCP station and edit it there?
You can install the media100 encoder so FCP can read the footage.I absolutely don’t wanna edit on Media100 since I think it’s inferior to my FCP setup from everything to options, effect to speed.
Anyone have any other ideas/suggestions?

Yes, avoid the hassle of trying to work with media 100 media in an FCP environment. Capture the dv50 through firewire, natively, in FCP. Choose or make the appropriate easy set up and go for it. No capture hardware needed unless you plan to do a 10 bit online.

Just as long as you have a DVCPro 50 deck with Firewire, you can capture into FCP 5 with no problems. Make sure your capture and sequence settings are set to DVCPro 50.

If you have the SD-93 it should have it as it comes standard. Anything else you add to it (like SDI/analog component) is extra. WHich model do you have?

I really don’t know. never thought about it. Have to check when i get to the office.
I know it got SDI/component aswell as AES/EBU thats what I used on it.
It’s big like AJ-SD965P, but it’s darker and yellow digits.As you can hear I havent used it in 2 years! hehe

Hmm, I wouldn’t count on it having firewire then if it’s been sitting around for two years. Maybe there’s an option for it, or perhaps this is the time where you can get yourself a capture card. Something like the aja IO or perhaps the aja IO LD (it’s cheaper, but digital only) would seem to suit your needs.

I think the deck is called something like AJD850 or something.
it was bought around 3-4 years ago. I can’t recall I seen a firewire port on it.

Yeah, if you are going to continue to cut in FCP, I’d invest in a capture card solution, rather than spend more money on the deck for a firewire i/o. I’d check into AJAs io LD, or if you work with analog sources, an AJA io full version. Probably the same or less than a firewire option for your deck and you can get more out of it.
