I installed SheerVideo and compared it to uncompressed and to DVCPro 50.
I was amazed how i didn’t see any difference between the codecs.
SheerVideo (4:4:4) at 20.1 MB/sec
SheerVideo (4:2:2) at 20.2 MB/sec – that was surprising.
DVCPro 50 at 7.3 MB/secSo for this project I used DVCPro 50 codec.

if you have any picture/audio sent out thru firewire you should know there is around half of sec delay compared to what you see on screen.

The bitrate of DVCProHD is 100 Mbit/sec Thats 15 MB/sec
The SATA drives easy push 30 MB/sec, even more if you RAID them.
So the playback is no problem.In FCP you have alot of presets, just choose one.
The best thing is to go native and capture over firewire from camera, that way you don’t even need to use the capture card.Yes, you can go component, composite or SDI.
You need to set up your AJA Kona controller to the inputs you want to use. It only “listen” on the inputs you say it would. (and outputs)

I would capture everything native over firewire then downconvert.

I just had a look at the layout at:

So for minimum requirements to make this work I will need:
1 XRAID
1 metadata controller – I could use a old G4 for this, And add one extra spare G4 for backup controller – have a few of those.
1 fibre channel switch
4 fibre cardsThat doesnt sound so bad!

you need a hardware card for HDV output, like KONA or Blackmagic.

iMacs run duo’s, wouldn’t call them mobile.
Before that they ran G5’s.Doubt you will see a AMD in a Mac either… they’re working with intel…
I’ve seen some benchmark tests between the duo iMac and the G5 iMac and still the G5 iMac was faster in alot of tasks.
