  • Uncompressed quality with spacesaving compression?

Posted by Mike Johnson on May 10, 2006 at 10:37 pm

I’ve various 4:2:2 footage, DVCPro 50, Digibeta, etc.

I have a Quad G5 and this week I’m going to buy the Kona LHe card.
I’m going to start to capture thru SDI, and I’m thinking of using some of the Uncompressed codecs.

My question is how do I get maximum quality into my tapes and still use as little HD space as possible?
A capture at around 10 MB/sec would be nice.

Are there any non destructive uncompressed codecs that will work with my setup to be?

If I go 8 Bit uncompressed the filesize will be around 20 MB/sec?

    What are my options?

Well, what’s your final output? Are you editing or finishing spots? What you’re looking for doesn’t really exist with the Kona… personally I champion DV50 for most editing – captured straight from Digi over SDI it looks GREAT.

The DV50 codec works for me. I do a broadcast show with little effects and full color correction…no QC failures to date!

Uncompressed is great if you’re doing a lot of effects work, etc… Other wise you can save a ton of space with the DV50 codec. It runs around 7MB/sec.

    thank you for your suggestions.

I installed SheerVideo and compared it to uncompressed and to DVCPro 50.

I was amazed how i didn’t see any difference between the codecs.

    SheerVideo (4:4:4) at 20.1 MB/sec
    SheerVideo (4:2:2) at 20.2 MB/sec – that was surprising.
    DVCPro 50 at 7.3 MB/sec

So for this project I used DVCPro 50 codec.
