Thank you for this info. Not being a IT guy a lot of what you’re saying kinda goes over my head, but i’m sure our IT guys will know what your saying. that being said i think i know generally what your saying.

sadly this seems like there will be a lot of growing pains. so we have to decided do i go throught the pains in hopes of something better or do we switch platforms to more of what were are use to. part of me wants to be on the cutting edge and step into the dark. but the other parts wants me to not rock the boat.

    decisions decisions 🙂

[MIke Guidotti] “Most schools have shared edit bays which require multiple user logins as well as SAN storage. That basically rules iMovie X out. oh, sorry FCP X.”

This is completely my point. this is probably why NYU doesn’t want to try and support FCPX the infastucture isn’t there. and the app doesn’t support key issues. and i’m not talking to major compaints we are hearing ad nausum. (EDL, Multi cam) instead of have 100s of students coming in with problems that they can’t address yet. its better to say hold off and wait.

a lot has changed since we were Ricks 🙂 that being said yes we will be holding off and waiting. we are not going to make any rash desision and a lot of this is knee jerk reactions. but i have to be mindful of what we teach students. i have to completely disagree with your we don’t have to teach “professional” editing. while we are not a film school we still are in the buisness of turning out professionals in all of the schools. so yes we need to teach what will get them jobs and careers.

also in its current state FCPX doesn’t intagrate into our currernt infastructure at all. and if it never does then we have to look to what will.

Here at BYU Idaho we are also not sure if we are going to go FCPX. We are currently going to do the wait and see, but we are not going to upgrade anytime soon. I am starting to lean farther and farther away from FCP. Adobe in my mind might become the Next FCP for students here. While there are many features i like about FCPX there are many i don’t, and there not the compaints that have been gone over on these forums ad nausem.

    will see.

I can’t believe that you can only add transitions to clips that on on the Storyline track. why in the world can’t i add a transition to 2 clips on a uper layer. theres a lot of little things that seem so silly.

What are you talking about. the Star wipe is the only transition in FCP X. Why have hamburger when you can have steak right.

Now Star wipe to the next topic*

I defiantly want the “Polish Turd” Filter, takes a steaming pile and turns it into a Hollywood master piece.

I guess I could settle for the “Magic box” button or the Suck-less Slider

I don’t think the serial number will be a issue. When we upgraded the university to fcp 7 we had one serial number for each department. And that serial number activated x number of seats depending on how many units that department had. My only concern will be app store and download but I’m guessing that apple isn’t dumb and theyll offer a disc version.

    I might be wrong.

I feel like our facility and others like it (Which I think are more of then people think) is apples target market. As acquisition goes we are 100% tapeless. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have old tape archive, but everything new we generate is tapeless. You are hard press to find any NEW camera out there that shoots tape. I think apple see this and understands that their product needs to evolve and change with the times, to fit our needs. For any of our old tape stock we have a separate app for ingesting. To me I have no need for tying up an editor just to ingest some footage it’s a waste of a resource. The losing of log and capture may impact one man shops because they don’t have other resources and all they have is a tape deck and final cut, but again I seriously doubt that those people have 1000s of hours of tape archive like we do. I have estimated we have 300 Terabytes of SD DVCpro Tape in our archive.
Another thought going along with the changing times. I don’t hear anyone rioting that our new macs or pc don’t have 5.25” or 3.5” floopy drives in them. Technology changes and workflows need to change. We can’t just sit on our larrels and do things the same old way if so you’ll be surpassed but other upstarts hungry for your clients.
As for Kenyon if I’m reading your post right you are editing down 7 hours of super cross footage after you have captured it. To me that seems terrible inefficient, get something that will allow you to capture and edit simultaneously then there is no waiting for capture to complete before edit begins. The app or hardware will pay for itself from saving all that time wasted on waiting for capture.

    My ramblings
