[Kevin Patrick] “Really? Got any screen grabs?”
I am just asking for a Hypothedical list. Not anything real please read my intial post. the basis of my question is really there must be some things that FCPx does that people like in some fashion, so what are those things that all other NLEs need to adopt. we also know of many many things that FCP legacy did that other NLEs did not so agin what are some of those things that we would like to see others intagrate.

Avid Announcement
RED Announcement
Canon AnnouncementKinda silly why are they all competeing for the same day? doesn’t seem like the best move any one of them could overshawdow each other then they risk there announcement to fall on def ears. Oh well i sure hope is MC 6, Pro Tools 10 a week ago, Avid accedentaly posting there MC6 stuff on the Web that would my best bet.

[Steve Connor] “Most of the larger earners on YouTube aren’t making movies and a lot of what they do wouldn’t translate to film or possibly even Network TV. They are playing to a generation who’s viewing habits most of us don’t understand or can even hope to predict.
I’m not saying FCPX is for them, it’s just there is an emergence going on in YT that will pass most of us by.”
Again i’m going to say that perception plays a huge part in this. Youtube for how many millions of people watch a video doesn’t not have the same prestiage as being on Primetime TV of a Feature Film. (it might some day but now not so much)
the perception is Youtube is 15minutes of fame, where TV and Cinema = celebrity. This is why some of the top youtube people try and make the jump to tv. Rett and Link are great examples, they had one of the most popular youtube channels but they jump over to IFC which definitly has less viewership but heck there on TV

[Clint Wardlow] “The issue here isn’t whether Pros use DSLRs or (even FCPX), but her perception of FCPX”
Not just her perception of FCPX but it is of DSLRs. I don’t know how many DSLR kids i have met that constently say the Canon was use to shoot this movie or that movie. why do they say that becasue they want to believe that pros do use DSLRs then in turn they can feel like that are just like them. Perception is a poweful thing. FCPX has the perception that it isn’t High end. while “some” DSLR people have the perception that what they are using is High End.
this is why the perception is that AVID is the king. is it a suprior NLE to all others in the world. i would say no its got its strengths and weakness but the perception is
AVID = Hollywood
DSLR= almost hollywood
FCPX= Not hollywood at allMike Jeffs

[Bill Davis] “Were you even at the Supermeet? You couldn’t have been – unless you had some kind of terrible cold that made you functionally blind and deaf.”
I was there too, I was sitting close to the front on stage right. Yes people were cheering and gasping, but i wasn’t and neither were some of the more seasoned people around me. We understand Marketing hype (Heck we are responsible for Making most of it right), from everything I notice the majority of the cheers gasps and other were from the FCPX Target Market. What I will affectionately call the DSLR market, Those that are trying to start out in the business. But from the majority of the longtime editors as soon as it was done we all starting saying well what about Multicam, What about exports, what about this, what about that, ultimately everything that we currently say we can’t live without.
So yes the NAB meet worked and didn’t work at the same time. it work to get those apple sees at the target Market hyped up, but those of us who go to NAB not to be WOWED but to actually do work and research I think it utterly ended up back firing. before the Meet I kinda was hoping the presentation would be more Akin to a Large scale “Whisper room” that we see all over NAB, but in the end it was just another Apple Marketing gimmick.
So for me the Drama it created was definitely not worth it. I the college environment i have to have budget plans 1 to 2 years out. this whole FCPX has become a major headache because i am now forced to try and figure out what will be the best for our students all while trying to be a fortune teller.

[Gary Hazen] “begin rant
Unfortunately the schools don’t spend any time teaching the boring stuff. I once asked a professor if they taught the students how to read a scope and he said, “No we don’t have time for that, we teach em’ Media Composer and Final Cut – that’s about all the time we have.” The primary focus of a course on TV/Production should be on the fundamentals rather than a specific NLE. Editing platforms come and go, the fundamentals are constant.
— end ran”I actually agree with this rant. It is unfortuante in our school this is also the case, not having enough time. But “lucky” for the students who work for me I cram this stuff down their throats. I can tell those that actual learn the technicle stuff and the “Whys” are the ones who end up getting better jobs or move through the ranks of their jobs quicker. The age old qoute is true Knowledge is Power.

So from what I am reading it seems the pros and cons fall into these main catagories
Pros
Its easy to pick up and learn
Format Agnostic-ish
orginization features
CheapCons
Changes tried and true editing practices and techniques
Changes the languague of editing
Possible low market penatration (but don’t know)
Not super Stable
Avid is as Cheap (for eductional)I would love more thoughts

Ben,
I whole hardly agree that teaching storytelling and theory are important and necessary requirements. Our main issue is this. We are a 4 year university, with the mandate of being a Liberal arts school but with the focus on job ready students when they graduate. We do not prepare students for graduate school, or to go into more debt. We are to train students in their field of choice in a way that prepares them to be ready to get jobs. This is put in the most simplest terms of course it’s a lot more then this but essentially this is it in a nut shell. The School was recently rank 9th for best value for the cost of tuition in the nation (tuition here is aprox 1,200 a semester).
So with this in mind yes we need to teach students Theory and practicality, in this particular it means we have to teach software. Because of the small staff 3 full time TV/video/film professors and the relatively short amount of class time (4 year university after generals only 2 years of major course work) we have to cram and a lot into a little amount of time.
My particular job on campus is to support the university with its video needs (the institutional projects; commercials president messages ect.) As such I hire current students to work with me in this field. Again I don’t have a lot of time to train them on how to use a NLE I need them to be able to come on board and immediately start working. I think of myself as a hybrid Educator/ actual employer. So I am trying to figure out what will help these students get jobs in the “Real World” while having them help us.
For me it is a interesting pickle which is why I reach out to you experts and potential employers to get your take and help me help the university make a informed decision.
PS I have video skills not grammar skills 🙂
