It looks like it depends on what platform your going to run it on windows or Mac? but i did a quick look at adobes website, it looks like there are a varity of capture cards that are compatible but my guess would be to get one of BlackMagic’s Decklinks. That would give you a plethora of input choices.

Now that would only give you one source going from the camera directly into the Decklink, if you wanted multiple sources, like multiple cameras you are going to need a video switcher, or something to act in a similar fashion. are you planing on more then one source?

December 29, 2011 at 3:59 pm in reply to: Very bad customer service from Tricaster (Newtek)

We had a coouple of tricasters for many years, they all worked as advertised for us. We don’t use it very heavily though, currently it main use is for students in the Communications department to produce a weekly news show. Students are nortious for “making tweaks” but still its a rock soild device for us.

I’m guessing that you just got the lucky end of the stick sorry to hear your troubles though

p.s. I have learned that in the broadcast world the more expensive a item the more you have to jimmy rig it to do what you want. Nothing like hearing “Of course your $100,000 dollar piece of hardware can do what you want but you just have to do this workaround.” it just a cruel joke from the broadcast Gods 🙂

Not sure there much out there in ways of reading.

I would suggest you find out what delivery format youtube expects. is it a flash based? something else? Then go and find a live encoder that will take your video signal and process it into that perticular flavor. there are many companies that make hardware to do this, but you’ll want to make sure that it can do the specfic format your host wants.

I’m Running 6 machines on 10.6.8 with MC 6 So I wouldn’t upgrade just yet also you won’t need to upgrade you Graphics card either.

Download and install the trial see if you like it. I came from FCP as well and I am finding I Like MC 6 More and More.

your AJA is support so all you should need to do is download the latest drivers. Nice thing about is after that there shouldn’t be any more configing to make it work. We use BMD multibridge for our IO and I was plesantly suprise on what little i had to do to get Avid to see it. wam bam it worked no figiting with the settings like in FCP.

Go for it. it takes a bit to get use to and its a bit frustrating overcoming the muscle memory build up from using FCP but its great for us.

December 27, 2011 at 7:31 pm in reply to: Avid MC 6 Media Creation menu and Import menu

That seems like a good workflow, do you think i would have any issues flip floping from SD to HD.

What i decided to do was AMA link to my Full res MOVs then use the consolidate/transcode to down res to a proxy file, in this case i did do xdcam 17.5 my system can handle the 9 angles just fine.

But thank you for the advise i will try this out and see if it works better.

    Thank you

[Scott Fisher] “I have done a bunch of lighting but have zero idea of what I have used”

There are a couple of good DVDs out there to help you learn lighting. the one I make all my students watch is Vortex Media’s “Set up and light great interviews”. The great thing is he helps you build a generic light kit for about $1500.

I also think there is a new cow video on lighting.

Invest in a good tripod I have spend as much in my tripod as I did the camera. Its worth it, Smooth fluid motion is critical. If money is no object then I would suggest a Vinten Vision 100 to go with a ex3 or hvx.

I would not shoot interviews with a DSLR I like the depth of field but the fact you can shoot longer the 18 minutes of contious footage is a pain. If you need the DOF then get a Sony FS100 or Panasonic AF100 they are great cameras for talking head interviews.

    MY two Cents

Do your homework, Investigate, every situation is different what works for many might not work for you. If you can I would say rent gear as trials, It might cost the company up front but it will save them in the long run of buying something that is not going to work.

[John Young] “P.S. It is threads like this that makes me worry the Cow forums are becoming more focused on complaining and arguing rather than helping people out.”

I feel like the real problem is my generation’s sense of entitlement. Now I’m not saying that josh is this way or anyone else. But I have read many many many forums on here where people are asking for this community to basically do the hard work for them. Our generation somehow feels like the older generation owes us all the keys to the kingdom, without much effort on our part. There have been quite a few sociological studies to back this up. It’s “the everyone gets a trophy” syndrome.
What I feel like happens is older wiser or more experience members of this community get inidated with this mentality over and over again and it takes a toll. I’m not saying that these more seasons vets don’t want to share their knowledge because they do they wouldn’t be here if they didn’t, but just like a master won’t share with his apprentice until after the apprentice has shown he is willing to put in the hours and hard work required.
Josh asked very vague general questions without much info for us to go on. So we answered in a way we thought would be helpful. Nobody here wants him to jump into a business and fail. Which is why there is all the don’t do it comments, I believe this comments truly came from people not wanting someone to fail and not from a place of we want to argue and vent and keep the new guy down.
My generation needs to learn how to ask the right questions in the right way to get what we are looking for. Heck I need to constantly learn this myself. I have been help by many of these same guys on this thread countless times so I know that they are not scared old codgers who would rather argue the help out.
Lastly yes demotricatztion of video has made things exponentially cheaper but still if you are wanting to be a “Post house” you will need more then 10k start up. Just add up the basic items for one video editor
Mac $3000 NLE $1200-ish IO $1000 Broadcast monitor $3000-5000(for lower end) Storage raid $5000 So to be a semi legitimate editor you are in the neighborhood of 13k this does not count for color correction, Mastering, Authoring duplication legacy tape media encoding/transcoding etc. that a post house will need to offer.
Sorry for the hijack on the thread josh and sorry for misunderstanding your initial post and now I need to apologize for this rant of my own.
