On the .ai’s try saving as them to CS2. I know that I don’t get previews on my old files, and my new ones show a preview in windows explorer. You may need to enable save as pdf compatible. though I don’t like saving with pdf compatible, cause your files get huge.

You may have a font conflict, with some of the fonts that load with Adobe. You also can try to quit and restart your adobe apps. Also look wihtin the entire font menu as fonts like Adobe Garamond show up under G, adn Centennial might show up under “L” for lintoype centenial.

Suitcase is still only on version 9 for the PC ,but is a wise investment, as you can add/remove fotns much mroe quickly. You should try to remove most all your fonts from your fonts control panel folder, except the basic everyday fonts you need, and this font you are having troubel with.

PNG and gif do allow transparency to be checked as an option. You can try PNG-24 with transparency.

I usually drop .psd files into AE or Premiere and get transparency, but sounds like you may be on avid or some system which utilizes the alpha channel, rather than layer masks.

We certainly do know what you are talking about. In Illustrator or Photoshop

In Illustrator the font menu in the type palette does nto display in it’s own face.

Though I like this option, I suggest turning it off to speed up your machine when not needed, adn this can crash on certain systems especialy if you have a corrupt font. I usually do my font preview in Suitcase, as I can get the font bigger and make a better choice for a headline font. I also like suitcase cause I can sort all my fonts by styles (transitional, slab serif, dingbats, art deco)

InDesign does not have a pixel measurement, but you can use points as there are 72 per inch.

Ok that tells us that the problem is not in how your printer is imaging the file, but most likely that the file has converted poorly to CMYK. The other option, would be that you monitor is displaying the image incorrectly, but your printouts are affected, so I doubt that is the case.

From my last post can you tell us what you have for edit >> color settings. If you are not familiar with the color settings, change the settings to : North America general Purpose and everything underneath will change to that. Yu may have either RGB or CMYK set to a colorspace taht does nto have a wide gamut adn colors get consolidated, similar to saving a low quality Jpeg.

You should also have view >> proof setup in working CMYK

Yuo have the rubiks cube in the task bar whcih has the basic 9 references points.

If you need a diffent possition, you may want to create a dummy layer mask, where the center is the position you want to transform on, and make the layer mask include everything in the layer (works perfectly on the rare occasion I need to do this). You can temporalily unlink the layer mask from the layer if you need to recenter the layer against the mask.

Faste & easiest is the magnetic lasso. CS3 will have a new tool you may like that you can check out the public beta.

Best quality is layer masks. You will use all techniques available (except magic wand selections) depending on the image. This usually includes copying a channel and doing a level adjustment to create professional quality layer density masks. I find the techniques utilized in the past by Crossfield and Hell operators give best results on the adobe platform, betetr than any mask pro or extract plug in.

What font is it that you are having troubel with? Lets pretend it is Frutiger.

Use font book to load the font, this will show you a preview of the fonts and tell you if it is loaded. Check Photoshop to see if the font appears under a similar named. You may originally began building the file with the ITC veriosn of Frutiger, adn are now laoding the Adobe version, whcih are exactly the same, but may be identiifed by differetn FOND number.

You may have a font conflict where another font is using the FOND ID number of the fonts you want to load, causing a conflict. Disable any other fonts except for what you need should fix the problem.

You also may have a corruptped .lst file. Do a find and delete all the .lst files on your computer. They get regenerated when needed, so don’t worry about trashing them.

If you are still having trouble tell us more like what are you trying to load (.otf, type 1 fonts, truetype).

Also try to update your video drivers
Immediately after booting photoshop, hold down Ctrl Shift Alt to reset the preferences.

Divide & conquer
Find a folder this happens on consistently. Remove everything but a few of the files. Keep adding files back until you find what file may be causing the problem. You may have a corrutp file that bridge is freezing on while trying to draw.

Can you post waht processes you have running in task manager? Maybe be spyware since you mentioned this is nto consistent, watch what other apps you have running, especially your outlook or email browser.

Is this happening on the Sony Vaio in your description?
