TiVo has changed the way I spend my tv time. I try to minimize time spent watching tv, but knowing that the exact shows I want to chill out to are available when I want to watch them is great. This old house classics is a fave – no relation whatsoever to what I may be working on, plus you can always use a brush up on your drywalling technique.
The mountain bike helps too – I always comment to my wife that I did not think about work once during the whole ride.
Ski season will be here soon, and there is a small slope in the same town as my office – might have to try that out this year.

Media 100 has been bought and sold so many times it seems no one wants it anymore. We have used and continue to use 2 systems since 1999, but I am getting ready for FCP.

the main problem I have is that the G3 just takes forever to render my M100 projects, not to mention the slow Boris performance when setting up effects (keyframes take 5-10 sec to refresh).

We have used Firstcom for over 10 years. I know it is a popular library because I will be in my car listening to the radio, at home watching TV or even on hold with my bank and I hear music which I have used in my videos over the years.
They have some tracks which you would swear are pop songs you recognize. I’m big into using acoustic underscores, which they have a plethora of.

Do you know how much a plethora is?
No? Then how can you say they have a plethora of acoustic underscores!

I guess the threads further down which speculate larger cheaper P2 cards in coming years will make this more attractive. Even a 64gig P2 card only holds 1 hour of HD video.

Yes I just looked at all the propaganda on the panasonic website. Seems short sighted that Panasonic rushed the P2 system to market without considering the vast majority of content creators who use Macs might also like to use this system. It seems to make sense, but I don’t see why they could not make a DV sized tape hold DVCPRO HD (I guess a DV tape would only hold about 15 minutes of HD), or make the camera slightly bigger to take a M sized HD cassette.

and forgive the newbie question – if my initial work in FCP is DV/analog, will the internal SATA non raid drives in the G5 hack it?

I crammed about 3.5 hours of video onto a 4.7 gig DVD-R ,last year. It was about 90% talking heads, the rest static powerpoint images, so I probably could have gone even higher compression. Don’t remember what settings I used, but I just guessed and aimed low.

It is interesting if you have a DVD player which can display the data rate coming off a commercial DVD, they often have pretty low average rates – but as others have mentioned numerous times, those are compressed from an internegative or some such thing with tremendous picture quality.

Sounds like my current workflow Pierson.
I currently primarily edit with analog Media 100i – capture from DVCPRO via S-Video or the occasional BetaSP via component.
If someone sends me an SVHS tape, I dupe it off to DV so I can have timecode for offline/online.
99% of the time I do my 1,2,3rd edits at low-res 20kb/frame, then only conform at full res for the final edit, and routinely tweak stuff over a 6 month period thanks to batch dig.

So it sounds like if you want this same functionality with HDV tapes, you need to either dub it to DVCPRO HD (assuming you have a deck) or digitize as DVCPRO HD via Kona or whatever, and never delete the files (yeah ok).

Glad I am reading these threads before putting my proposal together – very educational – much more so than any product information from the manufacturers.

Incidentally, will FCP with a Kona or decklink let you digitize at low-res to save space for later conforming – or does the SATA raid or whatever you are using just have so much space that you don’t worry about space. A little off topic, but thought I would ask.
