Matt, I thought you were a little quick above to assume you’d made the wrong interpretation of the question. It’s often hard to figure out what posters are getting at, so a scatter gun approach, insert my first response here, works.

AE Help Files > Contents > Keyboard Shortcuts
You’ll have to copy paste them into one document as they come in sections.

This worked for me.
Copy the position keyframes.
With the pen tool make one point, creating a mask on that layer. Twirl down the mask until you get to Mask Shape. Higlight mask shape, then paste. You shoud have a mask in the shape of the motion sketched path.
