    Hey there,

    Try some of these suggestions

I work on HD footage (1920×1080) with less ram than you (at the moment) so these settings may help

i’ve created this effect in similiar type scenarios.

So definitely what is going on is a simple breakdown.

    top layer text – uneffected
Bottom layer text has displacement mapping applied to it
    Then…
to get that random look, you mask off certain letters of your bottom layer.

or even mask off portions of the individual letters themselves. such as only allowing the top of the letter “T” to show..etc

finally maybe a little “fast blur on that 2nd text layer as well.

    there ya go

check out the “abandoned” trailer – a similiar scenario though much more advanced stepping and displacment play

  • Thanx for the tips, yes wanting to learn the method so I can apply it further or for enhancing a specific feel – often I’ve found trying to de-engineer provides a learning experience in itself that opens strange new options that otherwise may not have been apparent

I actually used a technique that worked really well without having to do any complex AE process…
    Which was ….

stand a few pieces of paper upright
and slowly pour black ink down them while filming them with your digital camcorder.
    capture that back into AE
Invert them, add curves to tighten the contrast up, and apply a Red solid “hardlight” over top
this will produce Red blood look over a black background.

This is nice because the flow of the ink is entirely natural and you can slow up the video to get the right “feel

    hope that helps
