A recap of a recent conversation with my mother in law.
HER: You know Mick you must work very hard when you first start a business. You must be prepared to put in long hours and take all the work you can get.
ME: Why?
HER: Because that is how you succeed you see.
ME: Says who?
HER: OH!! All the books on business tell you so. It’s just how it’s done
ME: How do you know?
HER: I have many friends who have been extremely successful in their businesses and they will tell you THAT’S HOW IT’S DONE.
ME: I would like to speak with them
HER: You can’t
ME: Why not?
HER: They’re all dead
ME: Case closed

My model is based on 20-25 hours billable on an average. Some weeks more, some less. I have to say, with this model, I have a sane life for the first time in over 10 years. I’m putting out a better product because I’m not burnt and I have the mind and time space to really listen to my clients. Life and business are good!!!

I’m working natively with the XDCAM format which is 1080×1920. I forgot to mention my machine is a 3 month old octo core with 4Gigs of ram. Will I see much improvement by adding another 4Gigs? Also, it seems my main issue is with the jumpbacks, it just seems odd to me that FCP has to re-render every time I move a HD jumpback. As I said I’m rendering the JB’s out of Juicer at 1080×1920 QT files. Should I be converting them to the EX codec and how do I do that? Again, thanks for the help.

Sorry Mark, you’re absolutely right. In my haste I didn’t check my post for grammatical accuracy, which is a pet peeve of mine. I must say I’m impressed with your restraint, I would have expected more of a harangue or screed, or perhaps even a wigging by such an indiscretion. You have bested me on my strength, and for that I am humbled.

I just got a sizeable job for a non profit promotional piece that i boarded. I made my own board sheets in MS Word. I kept the boards extremely simple using shot descriptions and rough graphics mostly. They weren’t elegant by any stretch, but the client was able to grasp my concept easily and communicate it to his board of directors. I even used a few stick figures.
