Then let his jaw drop. If you are doing quality work then you will command a quality price. If you can’t charge a good price for your work than please stay out of corporate and leave it to those who know how to charge for their work. Sorry for my harsh tone, but I am currently doing battle with a state university who is trying to market their new HD teaching studio to the open market. Using public bought equipment and public paid staff for free market profit. Be thankful for your job and leave the corporate gigs alone, especially if you plan on using university equipment.

Like the others, it depends on the client. I’m doing a project right now for a very influential non profit which will not only be a lucrative project in itself, but has the potential to open a lot of doors for me doing the kind of work I want to be doing. This client loves to have meetings at their facility, they will never be charged.

Make sure you have the latest version of the software too. I just did my first EX project and was having issues until I got the latest which I think is 2.7 but don’t quote me.

I also use a MacBook Pro. I switched over to Mac some months ago and keep forgetting that things now make sense and work the way they should.

I was going to try that but figured it can’t be that simple. Thus breaking my own rule of always trying the obvious solution first.

I’ve been in busy for myself only a few months and have had great success with the market you’re after. I knew right from the get go that competing with “free” production from the local affiliates and cable companies was a no win situation. Instead, I focused on businesses and non profits needing promotional video. I try to get them to think long term and multi platform. In other words, they might be thinking direct market DVD to a specific demographic. A shoot for that might only be half a day. I sell them on a full day shoot to get as much footage as possible for future projects such as a web video or even a TV spot. The footage is already shot so future costs are mainly post production and packaging. I get a an extra half day shoot fee and they see me as looking out for them and a forward thinker. I just did this with one of the developers I work with. The shoot was mainly still photography testimonial portraits for print ads. Since they were already paying me for my time, I shot a ton of construction stills as well as video. It didn’t cost me a dime more and now I’m a hero to the customer. And she took me out to a gourmet lunch to boot!!

This also brings up another topic. Consider offering still photography as well as video. I have a background in still work so this was a natural for me and to date, it’s been about 20% of my overall business. It has definitely helped smooth out some rough times. Hope that helps.

I played it on a MBP dual 2.4 with 2 gigs of RAM and wireless cable over AirPort and it played flawlessly. This is what I’ve been waiting for!

I just did my first shoot where I had to offload a SxS card in the field and honestly, I can’t imagine the process any more streamlined than it is. Now that I’ve gotten over my fear of wiping a card I just offloaded, I have to say, this is a dream….NO MORE FCP LOG AND CAPTURE HOOPS!!!

Here is my process. Let me know if it can be improved upon

– Set up a folder for each offload on a external USB drive connected to MBP
– Copy BVAP folder to the separate folder on USB drive when full
– Reformat card in camera
– Back in studio, connect USB drive to main system
– Ingest using XDCAM Transfer Utility
– Back up to DVD
– Edit

My only question is how to reformat the SxS card out of the camera for continuous shooting.

Thanks for the response Michael. So what you’re sayingis just treat the BPAV file like any other file I would be transferring from an external device. Next question, how do I handle the files back in the studio in FCP. Up until now I’ve been hooking the camera up to my studio system and using the Sony Transfer Utility for offload which makes it simple to import into FCP. I’m assuming I’ll do the same with my transferred footage only instead of transferring from the SxS card on the camera, I’ll be transferring the BPAV from the USB hard drive. Many thanks.
