did you update to 6.5.1 already? If not, do so. I had this problem on the G5 at work, everything was very sluggish (had nothing to do with motion blur or resolution, the computer should have been able to handle all that easily). 6.5.1 fixed the problem thankfully.

btw I have one question: how did you position all the different parts so that they lined up? Is it possible to line up pieces in AE without getting seams in between? I can’t quite tell if it matches perfectly in your cd jewelbox, but right now I’m trying to make a 3d perfume box (just a rectangular box) in AE and no matter what I do, I can’t get the pieces lined up perfectly, even using the exact sizes in pixels and using that to set the coordinates. I still get visible seams. Should i go at it by hand, tweaking the position coordinates behind the decimal point?

Cool! I’m definitely checking it out. I do this sort of stuff almost every day now so I have my own 3d cd template in AE set up, but maybe yours is better than mine 🙂

Ditching win2k in favour of XP might be a good idea in this case 🙂

There is a bug in AE 6.5 that causes it to run sluggish like a snail on certain mac systems. Had the exact same problem on the G5 at work. Update to 6.5.1 solved the problem.

I haven’t seen that tutorial so i don’t know if this is of any help, but when copying as pasting paths from photoshop or illustrator, realise that the masks are using a square pixel format and won’t translate properly to a non-square pixel composition. So make sure you’re using square pixel comps to paste the paths.

you can animate the mask shape property. In order to move the whole mask, make sure you have all the points of the mask selected, then set a keyframe for the mask shape, move the whole mask to a new location and set another keyframe.

yep that will work to create a sense of there being a great distance between the foreground and the background, without actually having a 3d background layer blown up to huge proportions then moved way back in the z axis. You can even use some subtle scaling and panning on the 2d background layer in sync with the camera movement to fake it’s 3d-ness, so to speak.

yep, it’s definitely a fantastic book. Very good for a beginner, but also gives you all the necessary info to develop your skills further.

  • btw. it seems to only happen with the “screen” and not with the other keying effects.
