February 21, 2013 at 11:36 am in reply to: feature request: versions for track modeIt’s true that ‘track’ grade hasn’t really made sense since we left 1 track grading at v7. I’d like to see track grades implemented by individual track as I often ask for multi shooting format projects to be delivered on a track per camera for ease of grouping. Perhaps keeping a global track too.

February 7, 2013 at 3:20 pm in reply to: The old budget grading monitor question… What PC monitor provides close to 709?If you are learning the software no external monitoring is required to tinker about to learn the UI and get general feel of what is involved in grading. You said you are doing this at home so if you want to see a bigger image plug the BMD 3d+ into your home HDTV over HDMI.
You need a colour accurate monitor to do professional work, we don’t all spend $5k+ on a monitor for fun, or to keep some kind of closed shop.

I use a AJA hi5 to split my output from Resolve to go straight to my FSI 2461w one way and through the eeColor to the projector the other. Works for me.
I guess you could have your internal LUT for your GUI on in Da Vinci THEN generate a new LUT for the client monitor from this output and store it as an option in the eeColor.

Ha! I guess the ‘where is Colouring going and will it exist as a stand alone process in the near future’ question is always on the minds of people here.
A nice little ad where the director clearly wanted the edit suite to look more impressive than they actually do.

January 10, 2013 at 3:03 pm in reply to: eeColor LUT box better than Black Magic for $700Hi Robert,
I’ve been trying to set up a similar system with Lightspace and the eeColor to give me rec709 on a JVC rs55 but so far have been stuck at 8 bit on the projector.
I’m running resolve through a BMD 3D+ HDMI to eeColor HDMI to projector (and HD-SDI to a FSI monitor) but the projector says it’s getting 8bit color. If I go directly from the 3D+ to the projector over HDMI the deep color depth is greyed out with no bit information displayed.
I’ve never used the HDMI before this new set up. Did I miss the BMD card is only 10 bit over HD-SDI and not HDMI even though it’s 1.4a? If so, which AJA box is required here? Will the Hi5 do it or Hi5 3D.
Thanks,

Hi Etienne,
It’s not good news really, we all did not buy grading monitors because it’s fun to spend money on expensive kit, some things are essential to the job. You need your monitor to truly show the rec709 Color Space to start grading – none of the others will do at this stage. To get your monitor bang on accurate for grading would cost about 10x the price of the monitor itself (ie. the same as a grading monitor) using Lightspace CMS to create a LUT for example.
People here are all for sharing cost effective ways to get grading but really it seems you’re asking how you can set up as a Color Grader for under $500 and start bidding for work against people who have invested $1000’s (or $10,000s) on ACCURATE equipment.
If you really want to take steps to start grading professionally then doing an internship at a good post house then that seems like a great place to learn about colour accuracy and all of the associated terminology and issues. Your question really leads me to believe that you don’t really know that much about grading yet and just having Resolve Lite and calling yourself a grader doesn’t make you a Colour Grader. In the meantime use Resolve Lite and your Asus monitor to practice with at home.
I’d say it takes a year or so of reading up and practicing to get competent (ie. confident you aren’t making things worse) and the rest of your life to get really, really good.
Good luck
Michael.

October 19, 2012 at 5:17 pm in reply to: HSL or tracking not working with alexa log-c footage (v8.2)Hmm,
I am updating to 9 though it involves a OS update as I’m running SL so have to complete current work before I hibernate for a couple of days to get the new OS running with everything working as it should and tested

I’d buy the fast forward Resolve class by Warren Eagles on the fxphd.com website for $99

thanks guys
same as v8 then. I was hoping as I’d Alexis Van Hurkman’s demo with alpha’d titles that it would just work with picture in picture now.
