April 26, 2012 at 11:28 am in reply to: Repair corrupted project file

Is it me or is anyone else getting seriously worried about the “Fragility” of FCP X projects?

It’s something that really bothers me, the autosaves to the same directory and only when you’ve saved something and no option to save to another disk/folder.

It’s down to the fundamentally disastrous way Apple have decided to separate Events and Projects.

There’s a very obvious fix: Take the sharing and render files out of the project files.

Render files can – by default with maybe an option in prefs. – go on the same disk as the Event. That would mean Project files could then live on the system drive and get backed up by usual back up means.

And as for exports/sharing: Well ask us where to put them! Its a hangover from iMovie and pro’s really don’t need to be hand held with this stuff.

Make projects a filetype not a folder.

Give us back autosave to another location.

I regularly shoot and edit projects that are time critical (be it broadcast news or up to wire financial corporates) and to be honest not having the safety net makes me shy away from using X on these projects.

If I can’t be up and running again in minutes from a hard drive crash or project corruption I’m not happy.

It’s a pity because the irony is for most of those projects X would be much quicker than 7 but I can’t risk it.

April 25, 2012 at 7:17 pm in reply to: BBC switch to Premiere?

I only know of one production at the BBC using premier. At that’s basically because the producer only uses PC’s and doens’t like Avid – totally mad! The VT editor is constantly hitting her head apparently. She cuts a very similar show for a different producer in the same dept on Avid and gets it done in half the time!

I suspect – and will to find out – what’s happened is that the BBC bought a blanket licence for the production suite or master collection as it worked out cheaper than buying separate licences for AE and PS, which instantly gave them 1200 copies of Premier – if they want it or not.

I’m really sorry to hear about your problems, sadly I dont have any answers I’m afraid.

I just want to say in case Apple are listening that this is exactly what I’ve been hammering on about since 10.0.1 – that the lack of autosave is a disaster waiting to happen!

Its a crazy workaround but what I do is have Chronosync running in the background every couple couple of hours and regularly drag the project over to a USB stick that permanatly lives in my computer (this automatically makes a copy).

    Good luck.

  • [Jason Porthouse] “Now, where’s my CV – time to send it to yer man… shame I can’t convince Panorama to do the same…”

As I understand it Panorama have only just got on the tapeless wagon, give them a while to get their heads around that first.

  • I have had similar issues on my late 2010 17″ MBP.

When it was happening, I noticed that in activity monitor the Dock was running at 100%. Quitting all the programmes and rebooting seemed to cure it. From reading the web I’m not the only one.

    I think its a 10.7.3 issue…

    How about this.

if you do shift+Z, this zoom’s the timeline to fit. If the end of where you think the timeline should be isn’t near the right of the screen, then maybe there’s a black or a gap generator in it. click on delete and then press Shift+Z together.

If the end of the timeline is to the right hand side then you have a corrupt project.

[Jim Giberti] “Here’s how bad it was.
Everything, the whole edit and all finishing was done in a lovely organized Primary and a few neatly organized Compound Clips.
All that needed to be done was to add a stack of names in order to customize the film for different dealers around the country.

As a matter of interest were your clips in the timeline all the same resolution and frame rate? I only ask because just today I got a phone call to add some subtitles to a video (as the audio was so poor!). I spent half an hour or so putting the first few subtitles in and it was terrible, beaching balling all the time etc.

The I remembered that the timeline is 1920 x 1080 25p, the clip I was subtitling was some weird MP4 (can’t remember if its optimised or not) but on top of that some weird frame size and 29.97. And my subtitle FCP effect is 1920×1080 25p.

So I exported an un subtitled submaster to Prores 422 and loaded that into its own project sticking the subtitles over that

…. and with that FCP X was back to its usual snappy self.

[Jim Giberti] “Anyway, for the second project in the last three weeks, the “X Factor” (my new expression for the consideration one must have before risking serious work in this program) corrupted my projects, media and drive.”

Blimey that’s serious! Did it corrupt the backup’s to?

That was amazingly useful in that I didn’t realise you could put video clips beneath the primary storyline when compositing.

    Thanks.
