Basically the full stereo or surround mix that you woul get if you just hit export normally and not export audio as roles.
Just nice short cut thats all.

Hadn’t thought of doing it that way but it would still be really handy if Apple provided a way of selecting the mix in the roles export window.

Avid is much more than just MC, there’s also Newscutter, DS etc etc.
What might happen is that Avid might concede that MC is a niche product and start to charge a niche price.
We’ve all swallowed the kool aid spread by Apple and the like that pro software can be cheap and thus editing can be cheap. That was supposedly going to cause all the big iron facilities to disappear – which hasn’t happened and turn’s out that might not be such a good thing after all.
Lets not forget that the cheapening of tools by companies like Apple has driven down the perception of talent needed to drive that software.
Personally if Avid did put up the cost of software to a level that made sense for them then bloody good to. Our industry has been cheapened by cheap tools and quality has suffered.

[Jeremy Garchow] “But while editing, something like “ReallyAwesomeShot” has much more meaning than “12039.mxf” to an editor.
“Could not agree more.
But if FCP can rename “DATETIMEID” to “Totally awesome shot” and link back then it can also rename “A_CAM_Disc_1_clip_2” to “totally awesome shot” Call me silly but isn’t that adding extra steps?
[Jeremy Garchow] “So, we have to think about what is best for the greatest number of situations. While file name is convenient, it’s not always best.
“But more often than not, a file name is absolute so that should be the link.
If I transcode a H264 file out of a 5D, more often than not I won’t go back to the original where as I might easily want to go back to the original files on an XDcam disc or of a clone of a card.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Even though this is harder to read to us humans, it’s makes for much better media management even if it adds a layer of complexity.”
Maybe I’m being stupid but how does this help? A clip name is a clip name is a clip name.
If its on the XDcam disc as “CliptitleXXXX” then why is it better for FCP X to rename it “Datetimemovieid”
What if you export an XML and then someone want’s to load the data of the original disc? Or if like me you make a SPP image of a card. Seems an unnecessary step and over complication to me.

Yes that’s the point. Why does it do this and not use the original clip names?
What worries me is if you do a batch rename (changing just metadata as you say), do an edit and then need to relink back to the original files say in resolve or protools? What then. The most obvious way forward is for FCP X to just create the files with the right clip names in the first place.

Yes this a problem with FCP X. Its the same when you use the Canon c300 plugin, it genreates files long date time and not with proper clips names. With XDcam and Canon XF305/C300 material I don’t use the import plugins for X but convert the files in 7 or XDcam browser the then import the files into an event. I’ve flagged this up as I think its a bug, but I suspect others think differently!

Thanks to the Guys at Media Pro’s in London’s Whitfield St I got to play on a powerful last gen Mac Pro 2.9Ghz (I think) today with a Quadra FX 4800.
What can I say but wow its fast. Export was very nice.
I then went to play on a Retina MacBook Pro which has the FCP X demo footage on it. Its fast but I still think the Mac Pro is faster.

Hi Greg,
I use FCP x all the time and i agree the keyer is amazing – but on my machine it’s not lighting fast which is why I posed the question of what new hardware to buy.

[nick ring] “For h.264 files you might consider purchasing a thunderbolt Matrox unit w/ their MAX processor. or Handbrake. What’s your current conversion/FTP workflow?”
Hi Nick and thanks all so far.
Basically I tend to export either to Vimeo using the FCP X presets, WMV’s for some corporate clients with Flip4mac and some compressor presets.
Most of my broadcast work is cutting news for foreign broadcasters and FTPing HQ 264’s made using MPEG streamclip (their choice not mine) and then filezilla.
The big issue is the chromakey stuff. For this client, we tend to shoot 1920x1080p with Canon XF305’s (so effectively XDcamHD 422). Its usually a 8 – 10 min piece and a good 6 mins is keyed, with a foreground, background and often a mid ground of animating graphics. A small change often takes a quarter of an hour to render and its that I’d like to eliminate.
The problem with the bearfeats is they seem to use very short burst of material – i’d like to see tests with longer material to see how the different machines fair.
