Need more info.
Are you wanting to have the light by or on the camera or can you place the light close to the subject. 20 feet is a long way to throw a camera light.

Didn’t know it was just the Sony codec, would be a step is the right direction. Clean HD 1080p (or psf) would be great also.
Will the up and coming Sony S3 use that codec or is it using a 4:2:0 version?

Where and why did you come up with that? You have different resolutions, different codecs, no way this will work well.FIrst like we have posted a hundred times, you cannot edit mpeg4 video in FCP, it needs to be transcoded to something like ProRes and all you video should be converted to the same spec. If all your video is SD you need to edit in SD, there is no reason to edit as HD.
Convert everything to 720×480 ProRes, make the sequence match and do from there.

Canon has a new codec on there video cameras that is 4:2:2 mpeg, let’s hope it will find its way to the next round of DSLRs or that they will give clean HD video out on the HDMI ports.

If you have that card there is no need for the convertor, they convert SDI/HD SDI to DVI/HDMI, your card already handles that. But if it will not work you can get small HD TVs for less then the convertors now.

If you want faster H264 encoding you need the fastest processor or a dedicated H264 encoder. There is no getting around that. Like you said all the info is out there, you just need to make the decision. But if you really need speed the answer is the 17″ with a Matrox with a box with MAX (their H264 encoder). If you cannot afford that, then get what you can and understand encoding will take longer. There is a USB device TurboH264 that would help on any system and it is only about $150 or so.

There is no real need to use (HQ) the standard is fine for most camera sources.
You should have no problem playing this back.

Saying “HD” is like saying I drive a “CAR” there are many versions of HD and each one requires different specs.
You can edit okay with DVCProHD or ProRes if you have at least FW 800 drives (enclosures that have 2 drives striped together are even better) as long as you are talking about simple narrative editing, Not much layering and effects. Faster drives like a RAID system will also help on somethings.
Rendering and encoding will be slow.
