Try a 3-5 frame cross fade on the audio. Will clean up pops and is not noticeable.

The built-in mic is not very useful in most situations. The external optional mic does an okay job if you are close to your subject but you really to define what you will be doing. Unfortunately there is not one type of mic that works for all situations.

Why not send your audio to STP from FCP so you have the linking function there? Seems like it would simplify your workflow.

Just to throw in a thought – There are several HD decks that can read DigiBeta tapes so you can get a HD record deck that plays the DBeta and they start at about $36K.

The question is what is the sequence framerate as well as the clips captured framerate? 23.98? If yes to both,
the best quality encodes will always be exporting the timeline to compressor. Make sure the frame rate is 24P and then field domin. is grayed out.
I always recommend the highest CBR bitrate that will fit on the DVD. (Audio is always encoded in ac3 at 192)
If your video is good quality your encode will be good. (Unless you are trying to get 3 hours onto a DVD-5)

Two things- (and not trying to be smart)
1) Making sure you are posting in the correct forum. This is a DVDSP question.
2) If this is a mammoth project, you should really consider subbing it out to a Subtitle house. Subtitles within DVDSP are not the most recommended way to do a large project. You will soon find out why there are very few lower end DVDs with subtitles on them.

is there a shift fields on the slug. Don’t know if you are using FCP6 but I notice this was added to my FCP5 projects when opened in 6. It was only added to slugs.

I’m not very big on using VARs but I also have used Macs for years and very comfortable with hardware but this is one area I would recommend finding one. You can spend a lot of money and find out in the end it is not what you need. Always do your homework so you are not being sold something just because it is what the VAR sells, but bring in an “expert” for something like this.
One bit of advise make sure it can handle HD with at least ProRes422 codec, that gives a little extended life to the equipment. SD days are numbered and most post places will be doing at least some HD work within a year.

This is not something that the card needed but the TV needed. Unless your TV supports 24P the card has to add the pull down to make it 29.97.We work in 24P all the time and have no problem with dissolves, are you making sure the dissolve is rendered, if the timeline is orange (or even green) RT drops frames and quality to pay the footage without rendering. But if you want to evaluate quality you need to render the dissolve.
