Now about your encode times. If you are just fitting 90 mins of video on a DVD use a CBR at 6 Mbps and make the audio ac3 at .192 Mbps. (If you are really at or below 90 minutes you can push the video to 6.5 Mbps. This will really decrease the encode time over a VBR and not that bitrate it will probably even look better.

dpi has nothing to do with resolution, 1200 x 1200 at 300dpi has the same resolution as 1200 x 1200 at 72 dpi. The 72 dpi just spreads them out over a bigger area but 72 is processed at 72 dpi. Did you try a slight blur?

How are you viewing your sequence, external monitor?

You can get much smoother moves on stills by using Motion or AfterEffects.

Also may what to test out a progressive timeline.

I wasn’t recommending that they bring in the motion file, just not to render to a codec that would need rendering in FCP. Render out of Motion to the codec you have for the sequence.

Yes FCS2 works great on a MBP (I have a 1st Gen and the new ones are a lot faster).

I would say nether is the standard, both have there place and users. It is never wrong to learn both. If you are have the time, money and desire to learn both go for it. For me it would be a bit confusing trying to learn how to do the same thing 2 different ways would make my head hurt. Learning both would probably be helpful if you what to market yourself as an in-house editor,”oh I can cut on either”

Before you buy a MBP I would ask if you need it to be portable. You get a lot more power for your bucks with desktop. But a new MBP can handle pretty much anything out there at this time especially with the AJA IoHD.

I guess since I’m not an engineer type I don’t understand what all the fuse is about. Didn’t seem like doing everything in Drop Frame would ever cause you a problem. Especially if you have a device that requires it. Other then losing a few 0s and 1s every now and again it seems pretty transparent to me. Only time I have had a problem was on a multicam shoot and audio and video where set up differently as the confirm didn’t workout but we where able to fix it by hand.

Lower the Max Bitrate to something like 8.5 or lower and it should import.

I have shoot concerts with smoke/haze, if I pull a little bit of blue out of the highlights and mids, it helps to cut through the haze.

This is not a Sony problem. Yes, while some DVDs are made so they can playback PAL DVDs, yes, more times then not they are cheaper models of players, yes some of these players convert the PAL standard to NTSC so they can be played on any NTSC TV.

This in no way says that they are common and widely used. If you need to spend your DVD to a small select group that you can say, just go out and buy X DVD player (or tell them to just play it on their computers), then you can entertain just sending your PAL DVD to the States. If you are trying to distribute your DVD to the public at large you should not even give this the remotest thought. 99% (or something close to that amount) of DVD players in US homes today CANNOT play PAL

Never made sense to me to render out of Motion with the animation codec, bring it into FCP sequence only to render it to that codec. Why not match the render out of Motion to your sequence settings. Or just bring in the motion file and render it in FCP.
