Dropped frames is normally a drive wright/read issue. Are these drives FW400, 800 or USB, are you daisy-chaining the drives?
No bad things are daisy-chainging and USB Drives.

Poster Richard is right, on a small camera the crop factor is huge. But if your 100mm gives you as 700mm field of view and you are looking at matching that you may want to look into the Panasonic GH2, it has a 2x crop factor so if you used a 300mm lens you are at least at 600mm field of view. You maybe able to find a f5.6 400mm lens but you are getting really up there price wise.
Don’t know your budget but a better 3/4″ video camera might be the way to go.
But spider videos are SO CREEPY. Do see how you stay in focus with those things jumping around.

With the HPX170 or the HVX200 I would shoot in 720p mode unless I was matching other camera at 1080p, these chips are 720p chips. Also never use gain unless you obsolutely have too. Bring the lights in closer before going to 6dB.
But If you are talking about the shallow dof of the second you are just using the wrong type of camera if you need to be that far away from the subject. You need to be shooting on something like the new AF100, a DSLR or Red camera with very fast lens. All his shallow dof is with the camera right up against the focused subject. It also looks like he spent some time with color correcting.
I don’t think your stuff looks bad, it looks like something that was shoot in a expo room with very flat lighting. If you want something more dramatic you have to light and shoot it differently. Also it doesn’t look like the focus was spot on, that maybe the compression.

You can change the preset from Mulitpass to single, that would speed it up. Using a virtual cluster would also (but since you only have 2 cores it may not be worth it. H264 is a slow process there is a device (USB dongle) TurboHD that will give you better than or close to RT for $150 or Matrox has there MAX encoders but much more $ but I believe you get better quality for the extra $.
Encoding H264 is all processor, you want fast, you have to spend.
Also the type of video, fast moving, lots of cuts will slow down the process also, especially on multipass.

Don’t know why people expect others to read an article to be able to know what they did. You need to post your steps.
But if your 25fps footage is already progressive why would you De-interlace it?
For the best quality you should not be going back into a HDV codec, use ProRes instead.
Use the ProRes preset. Set the framerate to 23.976 in the Video settings and change audio from Passthrough to Enabled. Then turn on the Frame Control, Down at the bottom there is a retiming Control.
Choose So source frames play at 23.98. They will retime the 25 and there is no interframes, the retiming is so small it will not be noticable. This should be a faster way of doing it also. -

Does the 5D work when it is not in record vs when in record? It does change the signal from HD to SD in record where the 7D doesn’t. But if the 5D is not working either time you may have a bad HDMI port in the 5D, Try the 5D to something else like a HDTV.

You can also make a drop zone template in Motion, it would require rendering but the process would probably be quicker to build.
