Layered menu will do this if you just want a still of the image (and no audio for the menu). There is no way to do it with a motion menu and audio. It is outside of DVD specs.

the 1 GB limit is DVD spec there is no getting around that.
But you can use buttons over video and use a video track for your “menu.” If you do remember to disable FF and RW. If you don’t and a user uses those buttons the overlay gets turned off. You don’t have those available my default on a menu.

How long is your video duration vs the audio’s, they have to match exactly.
You should not be proofing with VLC. Not saying VLC is bad but it is not a standard player, you should be using a true DVD software.

First and foremost, HD DVD is dead, period, DVD is SD 720×480. If you need to give your client HD it needs to be as a file or on BluRay.
Why can you not edit in FCP, but if you are going to edit in FCP you need to transcode the video from the Tricaster to something like ProRes with Compressor. Then do your edit and say the file at the current setting. If you use Premiere Pro you will not have to do the transcoding.
DVDSP needs an m2v file for video and audio should be ac3. We have a ton of post about converting if you need to truly author a DVD.
Also, say you convert the file to an .mov mean nothing, that just means it has a quicktime wrapper. Like telling a mechanic you have a CAR, what kind of car is it.

What, that is crazy. what is the difference of mounting a USB drive over a DVD Disc, they both mount and have files that are getting copied over.
I know some replicator that tell everyone they actual prefer a playable DVD-R disc for a master.

Good recap. You are totally correct about not touching the media. That is why using a thumb drive is such a good idea. Adds about $20 to the project. So many people can handle your disc, just don’t have that worry with a drive.

Hardware but that means a 2 computer system with something like an AJA (or other) video device. Or use compressor with Frame Control turned on and set to Best.

If you have SD just send a DVD or just put SD on a BluRay. Double check me on this but if you put the SD on BR you can at least increase the bitrate and you maybe even be able to use AVC codec.
FCP does a horrible job of upresing so don’t even try that.

We have posted HD to SD workflow a thousand times here so if you do a little research you will find it.
When downconverting you want to choose 720×480 Widescreen or anamorphic, it normally confirms that it is a 1.2 aspect ratio, that is what you want.
You never choose interlace any where in your composition, export, encoding.
H264 should never be choosen for any step in the creation of the DVD.
You should be working is AE at the highest needed resolution. You export that uncompressed. Take that file and downconvert it to m2v for DVD and H264 for theater.

DVD is always 720×480, since it is going to a flatsscreen it needs to be widescreen, but still 720×480. You want to down convert your file to 720×480 with a anamorphic pixel aspect ratio (1.2). Author the dvd with 16:9 Letterbox. If you are creating the animation you also want to keep it progressive all the way through the workflow.
