[Bruce Lippy] “AND …. when it booted up again the icon for the ext HD was right where I had left it — which means it didn’t overwrite everything. “
    That means nothing at all.

[Bruce Lippy] “This computer has NEVER been connected to the internet. “
Is this true or is it just want you think we want to hear? How do you update the software? There is no reason to NOT have a computer connected to the internet.

What are you capture settings? That is the important info.

What do you have in that project to make it so big. I have project files that have multiple sequences and working sequences that hardly ever get much over 50 MB.

The recommended practice is to keep the project file on the system drive and the media and render file on the External drive.

  • you don’t check permission, you delete and FCP makes a new one.

Tom you are on the right track but…

You cannot run FCP from any drive but the drive you are booted to. So you have different boot drives with the different version of FCP installed on them. I have this setup for the same reason. I need FCP6 I just reboot to that OS and drive.

the question is what do you want to deliver the final as.

But going down to SD from HDV is cleaner than trying to going up to HDV to SD. If you use HDV in a SD timeline you will have to render the footage every time you do something.

Your other problem is different framerates you need to convert the HDV 24p to 29.97 by adding pulldown so it will be 29.97i SD.

A lot of work for nothing.

Leave the DV footage as DV, set your sequences to match all the settings. Dragging a clip to an empty sequence will ask you to change the sequence to match the clip this is what you want to do.

Then you need to find the 45 secs of the HD footage and just downconvert it to SD DV to match the other clips and working sequence.

There should be no rendering until you add effects.

You then export this when finished as a self contained QT with current settings.

“The following Media files are not optimized for FCP…” is not an error message, it is just a warning that can be ignored. It happens when the footage used was not brought in by FCPs Log and Capture or Log and Transfer.

Number things, first how is the drive hooked up USB or FW800, it should be FW800.
Is there anything else on the FW bus?
How is the Ext HD formatted? (needs to Mac OS Extended)
What is the scratch drives settings set to?
How much space is on the internal HD and the Ext HD.
Are you getting crashes when trying to save or when auto save starts?

Then did you do a clean install of OS and FCP?

May want to spend a few movements reading up on the workflow of the camera and FCP.
