  • Your first step is to convert into a codec that Media Composer understands. The easiest one for DNG is Resolve. Open the files in Resolve and make sure you set the REEL properly (use clip filename works best with Media Composer/Resolve roundtrips and AMA linking). I need to do a little research on the frame rate and what timecode will be applied ensuring that Resolve does not change it via motion effect, but by a frame for frame export. Off the top of my head, I would almost be tempted to export DPX from the DNG files to have a frame for frame filename and timecode reference, then AMA link the DPX into Media Composer. From there you can change the source to be “same as project” resulting in a slomo. But again I need to do some quick test to confirm the conform…

It’s a plug-in architecture that accesses then decodes, then passes it off to the player pipeline. This in itself has some ever so slight overhead. Codecs considered “native” is a more direct decode, but others go through a two step process.

And Media Composer does not do a lot with GPU if anything in the decoding process, so it is all CPU related for decoding.

Lots of factors, and mileage may vary. But the more footage you have, the more likely you will need to transcode. While there are some improvements from version to version, overall the rule of thumb is if you want “smooth” editing, then you need to transcode to Avid’s native and optimized codec – DNxHD/R

  • Correct. The File_ templates are based on CMX and while the spec has been broken for V tracks, the A tracks still adhere to that format and only support A1-A4.

In 8.4, they finally went beyond the CMX spec for audio as well as you can have up to 24 audio tracks.

As you mention, the GoPro is doing the (2x 23.976) rate (47.952) rather that the full 48fps. And with picture falling behind sound, you need to either speed up picture or slow down audio. If you were in v8.4, that process has gotten easier, but in v6.x, it takes a few steps.

    Picture:

Import: You need to go to console and enter “IgnoreQTrate true” and during the import, any audio will be dropped and picture comes in frame for frame. If I remember correctly, 6.x does not have a 1080p/50 project so you may need to do this in a 720p project. The other issue may be that 720p/50 may still assume a 25fps edit rate. I am not in front of a system right now to see what settings might be needing to be tweaked.

AMA: Once you AMA link and drag an entire clip to timeline, go to motion effect editor and change it to 100%. This should speed it up to be in sync.

    Audio

It may just be easier to modify the sample rate of the audio to slow it down by the right amount as seen in my blog about fps, sample rate and pitch: https://24p.com/wordpress/?p=195

Take a copy of your audio files, download WaveAgent from SoundDevices.com (free) and change its sample rate to 50.052kHz (assuming it was recorded 48kHz). When importing this into Avid (check audio tab in import settings) it will get slowed down by the correct amount to be in sync with picture.

Which direction is the sync drift? Audio behind picture or picture behind audio?

  • The problem with AMA is that you never know when it will become a hindrance to your editing process and then you are stuck with transcoding sequences, sources, relinking to transcodes, etc. Seeing that you have a lot of footage, I would recommend transcoding via AMA up front.

The transcoding will be muc faster than an import as it uses more cores, but you will still have to create your bin structure naming and organization manually. I wish they would develop features to be more widespread rather than just use folder name for DPX file naming…

Are the dropped frames always a single frame, or more? Cut the frame(s) out so you have a potential jump cut, then follow this tutorial

It may be a codec than is not supported for QT reference. May need to transcode versus consolidating.

I’ll have to look into this. So up to 7 takes, order is correct and after that it gets mixed up? Is that consistent?
