  • I have never used Marquee, and certainly not in that manner. If I remember correctly, text was imported via some Pearl script type process, but I may be wrong. That is something to look up in the User Guide. Maybe someone here has done that and can chime in.

    Perhaps a plug-in might have that capability? Boris, other?

  • The usual questions that go along with these type of projects:

    1. Are the different frame rates intended for slow motion (or fast motion)?
    2. Are you finishing in Media Composer and do not need to conform in another system at some point?
    3. What frame rate is the GoPro footage that does not play smooth?
    4. Are you grading the DNxHD 120 material or camera originals?

    Transcoding to a target frame rate 25p from other frame rates gets a motion effect applied that may or may not look best for your needs. For example, a 50p can be transcoded “blended” or “drop every other frame”. Each have their own look.

    Audio does not have a frame rate. It has samples. Timecode is calculated as an offset from midnight (0 samples). When you import 44.1 it will become 48kHz, but duration will remain the same.

    What is important for sync is what the frame rate was on the video when recording audio (44.1/48kHz) as that is what is in sync. For example, I can have one camera recording 24, another 25, and another 29.97 while recording audio at 44.1/48kHz. If I import each video into its own matching project and import the 44.1/48kHz file, they will all be in sync.

    So your first step it to create a 23.976 project, import video and audio (44.1 converted to 48kHz). Sync.
    Open bin with .sync clips in your 25fps project. MC will add a mix and match so you will see a repeat frame every ~24 frames. I have not tried this on .sync (subclips) ,but you might be able to change the play rate of both VA in source settings playback tab. Change it to :project.”

    If not, then you need to make new source master clips. I would reccommend exporting OP1a with a finishing quality codec (DNxHD 120 or higher). Then link to that in your 25fps project and change playback rate to project rate.

    Importing the 44.1 audio will get converted to 48kHz (project settings upon import), but will not introduce any shift in duration or sync.

    If the audio was recorded at 44.1 during production with 23.976 picture, and you are working in a 23.976 project, then “time” will stay the same, and sync is maintained.

    Ideally you don’t want to record 44.1 and most sound folks try to avoid any kind of sample rate conversion. But if this is just dialogue, you will be fine. As a point of reference, any music being imported from CD is also 44.1.

    Have you determined what type of conversion is being done? If using Avid’s Mix and Match, the audio never gets adjusted, thus no need for pitch correction. If the conversion is changing the duration as you find with frame for frame adjustments using the source settings playback, then there can be a pitch shift.

    Depending on the amount of pitch adjustment used, it is hard to notice the difference. For example, 24->25 is .7 semitone adjustment and unless you have perfect pitch, will most likely not hear the difference.

    An easy way to hear whether it a sound element is being affected. create some 1K tone and add to events to the timeline. Adjust one of them with pitch shift. You will hear the difference at the cut point. It may still be hard to tell in cases of .1% as with 24->23.976.
    Once you’ve got it, save it off to the bin.

    It also depends on how the conversion was made. If using Avid’s native Mix&Match, it maintains duration (48kHz) so there is no pitch shifting gong on, just a reshuffling of frames/fields through a motion effect to make picture match. In that case, no need for audio pitch correction.

    For example, was it 30.000 or 29.97?

    Then you use the pitch shift audiosuite plug-in to correct. Once you have it set, save it to the bin as a preset.

    When you say “render out”, to what format?

    It is typical that a QT reference file be very small as it is only a file that points to the media, not the media itself. If you open the exported QT reference in Squeeze, you should see your program.
