  • You are looking for the “Relink” command. “Relink to Selected” is inside the dialogue window once opened:

    1. Highlight all the new master clips
    2. Highlight the sequence
    3. right-click on sequence
    4. Select “Relink”

    Maybe try this?

  • The “relink to selected” is a subset of option in the “Relink” selection when right-clocking.

  • 2020.4 introduced the QuickTime AMA replacement from earlier versions. Your media is still using the old plug-in and as you’ve noticed you can relink again in with the new new. You will have to relink all your media and do a “relink to selected”. There may be other methods but that is always my fallback/failsafe method. Highlight all your clips, then your sequence, right-click sequence, choose “relink to selected” and from there I would suggest looking for tutorials on relinking via good ol’ Google.

The AMA linking is using a different architecture in 2020.4. You may need to relink manually selecting the new AMA plug-in.

a lot of people have been praying… ☺

Try separating V from A as a test and send as two different files, then combine them in MC.

While we would all love for a single universal interchange format to exist between all applications used in Media & Entertainment, it is most likely a utopia that will never be achieved.

That being said, each vendor as their own internal format optimized for their needs. Then there are the specifications for each vendor and interchange format itself – XML, AAF, etc. All of these are open to interpretation which leads to interop issues.

I find that video + Audio AAF causes the most problems, especially with double system workflows. Many users find that exporting an XML from Premiere to Resolve first, then letting Resolve export an AAF for Media Composer is better than a direct AAF between the two. I have found in the past the CM_Offset is usually audio related.

Also, depending on everyone’s support, be it XML or AAF, things are lossy. Meaning not everything is described – once you get beyond cuts, fades, dissolves, supers, motion FX, resize, etc. things get dicey or not supported at all.

I would suggest trying a V only XML out of PPro to Resolve then an AAF there to Media Composer as a start to see what will be successful.

  • Yes.

Although it is a bit dated and hasn’t been updated since June 2013, the information is still valid for you to create new custom columns are Avid columns that you might want to map to.

  • The only way to get all metadata into a file is to create an embedded AAF file which I believe only Avid products do. Even Resolve using Avid’s SDK to create MXF OPatom native media only puts in REEL which becomes TAPE in Media Composer, but all other metadata like scene, take, comments, etc. are lost. Resolve does export an ALE file that can be merged into the master clips.

In your case, the XMP sidecar file is only seen by applications that support XMP as a sidecar file. So all of Adobe CC for starters. Something to try is opening those clips in Premiere Pro and exporting an ALE file. Some text editing may be needed, but let us know if you get can far and we can discuss ALE tricks.

  • Avid will read some metadata (Tape for example) out of MXF wrapper if the encoding was properly done when creating MXF OPatom file. This would be similar to a dailies workflow. Any metadata beyond that is done via an ALE merge process into those files once available in Media Composer.

Is Adobe Bridge making a sidecar file or embedding? Also, note that Media Composer has never supported embedded REEL from MOV etc. when AMA linking.

The Blackmagic User Manual has a section and a table describing which effects are supported with AAF – Roundtrip from MC via Resolve is a special workflow as Resolve just passes through the same AAF but points to new rendered media (nothing else changing).

In this scenario, the supported FX will give you an idea of what “might” be possible. I say “might” because standards interpretation still takes two parties to do everything correctly and AAF while quite descriptive can be a beast to properly support. The fact that it is a binary format doesn’t help the end-user much as they can’t see inside the file for any issues.

I will also say that picture only workflows work pretty well, I have never had great luck when audio has been added, especially with double system workflows. If all sources V+A are from the same camera, you have a better shot at success.
