I have been using a Slingbox for years this way, and it works great. I also have used my TiVo to record different versions to, then allow my producer/director to select what they want when I am not at the system.

Now add remote desktop software and you can control MC remotely while watching a higher quality image via Slingbox on a different device.

These both really get to the same place, although personally I would prefer the second method for reasons I cannot really explain other than it seems cleaner to me that transcoding audio or not when it doesn’t need it, and how things link to each other, etc. Just seems cleaner to transcode picture, then sync to me – but I have done both with no problems.

You can also look into using QTChange from Videotoolshed:
    https://www.videotoolshed.com/product/42/qtchange

This one is still maintained and supported by the developer should any issue arise. The developer of MetaCheater has been busy editing The Hobbit, King Kong and Lovely Bones since he first wrote it… 😉

Unfortunately Media Composer doesn’t support the embedded REEL metadata in a QT file via import nor AMA link. What I use in these scenarios is a free software called MetaCheater that creates an ALE file which does extract the REEL and puts into the TAPE field. Import the ALE first, then do a fast “batch” import of the selected clips created by the ALE import.

You can merge the REEL information after the fact with a little text editing of the ALE file into the already imported clips, but the REEL would need to live in either the Camroll or Labroll column in order to use for EDL’s if that is a need.

  • I agree that Apple is the first to license, implement, and get it to market, but I believe that it is an Intel invention.

  • What happens to Thunderbolt if Apple abandons Intel for another processor?

Audio has 48000 sample per second regardless of how you want to divide up the frame count within those 48000 samples (23.976, 24, 25, 39.97, 30, etc,). The frame rate and timecode have no bearing on sync playback as it can always be ignored and there will still be 48000 samples for every second. Timecode and framerate is used to reference a sync relationship to video which does have frames. But since your recording devices don’t support timecode, it really is only about sample per second and ensuring those are consistent for the entire recording time during production.

Drift is usually an issue of unstable clock or recording other than 48000 and played back sample for sample resulting in a pullup or pulldown as in the case of 48048 and 47952 workflows.

When you change the rate in Cinema Tools, it does a frame for frame conversion in the NLE resulting in a speed up or slow down. You are looking to a frame rate conversion that does not change duration, but fills in or removes frames/fields as needed to do so. So a 1 minute clip is still 1 minute regardless of frame rate. Audio does not have a frame rate per say, but a sample rate/second. Time is time, so as long as you convert video to “time” it will stay in sync. Audio will adjust to time of you record in pullup/pulldown modes such as 48048 and 47952 with a sample for sample playback rather than a true sample rate conversion that maintains original duration. Depending on NLE used, each have their ways to deal with this.

Strange that it doesn’t see/hear the sound after the sync process. Perhaps in the interim, change the steps around a little:

Grade first, create QuickTime wrapped DNxHD (not MXF wrapped)
    Sync in Pluraleyes
Either fast import or AMA consolidate which both should be just the time it takes to do a copy.

  • Carsten Orit: Don’t know if it is technical possible but I think it would be cool. If a new faster CPU comes out, you just switch the CPU unit and all the rest works as before. Would be way better than having to replace everything every time.

As great as that sounds, it doesn’t sound like Apple to me. Everything they make is based on planned obsolescence. And that rate is accelerating. The business is built on volume and Apple is fantastic on monetizing every piece of it in their ecosystem. A laser focus on what most people do most of the time. Hardware, OS, purchasing, content (application or whatever). The latest OS update notification only seems to notify for applications available via the App Store, if not, the application now needs to update you whereas before it didn’t and was part of the OS notification. Just little things that indicate a play with us or you’re not really part of the Apple experience (all for a 30% cut). iOS is an even tighter ecosystem where Apple can also judge what goes in – some for good reason, others not.

All in the name of protecting the user experience… what was that 1984 commercial again?

I love my Macs, I love my PC’s, but most of all I love the work I do and try to keep OS out of it, but it is a very interesting thing to watch Apple become the new Sony as an entertainment company from content to how it’s consumed.
