  • If you use DualEyes, it is not a transcode as you are syncing the original camera .mov files with the audio files and have options to replace .mov audio with double system audio, or sync all elements by giving them a common start frame by truncating or padding audio files to match video.

If you use AMA, bring into Media Composer, and want to use PluralEyes, then it is a transcode first.

  • Or just use DualEyes and prep the sources before coming into MC via AMA.

  • You can still deliver a ProRes 444 file from Media Composer. It’s no less complex – the only complexity added is trying to go back to FCP just to deliver ProRes.

  • One thing to keep in mind is that Avid Media Composer AMA to Alexa created ProRes does not read the REEL from the QuickTime header which is what FCP wants to use. If you are getting the complete files from the shoot, there is an ALE that is created by the camera that has that information in it. That ALE file can be merged into the master clips created by AMA to get that information into the bin. If you don’t have access to the ALE file any longer, then you can use “MetaCheater” still available via a google search to create an ALE that extracts the REEL info and do the same merge process.

I hope Avid will one day allow REEL extraction via AMA to Alexa ProRes to eliminate a lot of these relink issues.

The same thing happens in a 1080p/23.976 project type?

  • AMA to all your clips again, highlight them all (even in different bins), highlight sequence, then do a relink. In the dialog box try “relink to selected.

No, deleting the PAT files means that the the media would need to be re-indexed once you turn it back on, which is very fast.

  • You have to be careful with batch importing as you have to do it on the original master clips with the original duration or else it will scale in the incoming media to fit. AMA is better as you can work directly off the sequence. Doing a “relink to selected” from an AMA link is a much better way to go. And as August says, import is much slower. AMA was optimized to used multiple processors so a transcode is much faster than the single threaded import process.

Also make sure when using AMA the second time that you are consistent with the levels settings or any color correction done may change as a result. For example, if you AMA linked with source settings being VIDEO levels the first time, make sure you AMA the same way the second time before transcoding.

  • As long as you don’t change the original camera file names to be different than what you see in the “Source File” column you will always be able to bring original camera files back in and recreate your sequence via a conform or re-conform depending on what you want to call it.

So archive the 500GB of material, on at least two different drives, (better three), and keep them at two (or three) different locations for safekeeping. Make sure to spin them up once or twice a year and make sure the environment is stable, etc. You may consider an LTO type archive. I usually make two for LTO, and three for hard drives. The saying for backup is” One is none, two is one, and three is two.”
