That’s nearly square. Your footage as it will display as letterbox. You may be able to use Squeeze to create that type of output with a crop to match X and Y.

24.00 is more troublesome in an NTSC world of 29.97. The difference between 24 and 23.976 is the same as 30 and 29.97 (FPS x (1000/1001))
That is why the rate is 23.976 – it also allows for continuous 2>3 cadence when going out to 29.97 formats.
In PAL based countries, it will be 24.00 and 25.00 as they don’t have the fractional frame rates as NTSC based countries.

ALE is designed for source clips information only and not sequences, so your only composition choices are EDL and AAF. What are the import issues with AAF? As far as EDL, try launching EDL manager on its own and do “open bin” rather than the send to. Opening the bin directly solves a lot of the translation back and forth issues that might exist.

Looks like some sort of issue with your MediaFile folder, or drive containing the MediaFiles folder. What platform and OS are you on?
Once thing to try is go inside the Avid MediaFiles/MXF folder and open each of the numbered folders (1, 2, 3) if available and delete both of the .mdb files in all of them. The relaunch Media Composer and see if the error persists.

I would recommend that you work at 23.976 for everything and do one conversion at the end to 1080i/59.94. This way there is a continuous cadence from beginning to end and does result in a better quality encode when going to broadcast.

I am on 10.8.2 (10.8.3 is not qualified yet), using 6.5.2 and it’s been quite stable overall. If you have the opportunity to move to Mountain Lion (even better with a clean install) and Media Composer upgrade as part of your student license, then I would say go for it.

Did it just start crashing a lot? What has changed that may have caused the stability to be worse? If you need the additional features found in 6.0 and 6.5 including the UI changes, then go for it. But seeing as you are on 5.0, have you looked into 5.x updates to see if that stabelizes things for you>

Might not get you all the way there, but once the clips are synced, autosequence the subclips and any MOS or wild sound clips not synced.
