You should be fine. Populating your bin from the Media Tool is one way to do it. Basically it’s the master clip with the following metadata:

    TAPE
    START
    END

Whatever else is there is generated by Media Composer such as codec, frame rate, audio sample, duration, etc. Depending on what is in the TAPE column, that should be enough to go back to the conform.

Have you looked at the ALE file in a text editor? What is in there that you don’t already have? If there is, then you can do a merge.

You do want the last radio button – merge on known sources. this just adds to the existing master clip and doesn’t make new ones. If you want to send a bin with master clips and the ALE (no media needed) to michael(at)24p(dot)com I can take a look at it for you.

You highlight all the clips associated with the ones in the ALE (from the same batch process) and select file -> Import. In the “options” select Shot Log and click the last radio button – merge based on known sources.” then point to the ALE and click OK (import). It will merge ALE metadata onto the clips.

April 17, 2013 at 8:52 pm in reply to: AMA transcode straight to on-line workflow

Exactly – the ability to triage through all the media and make selects, then transcode to a very efficient codec like DNxHD is one of strengths of AMA. I just shake my head when I read about the whole relink the AMA linked clips to the .new clips, etc… I see the same thing with videos people are putting up about using Resolve for dailies and never mention how to properly set up the SOURCE correctly so you end up with either something wrong, or non-existent. And even in the best intentions of “we will never go back to the camera originals” I say; “never say never” a deleted MXF file by mistake can happen quickly…

That is one of the bigger misconceptions of the AMA transcode. You do edit with the .new clips as that is what was created during the process and points to the mew media created. There is no advantage to linking the old clips to the new media. What I do is move the .new clips to whatever bins I will be using for editorial and close the original bin with AMA linked clips and put all those bins in a folder called Original AMA. From there, I change the name of the .new clips to whatever works. Later, a relink is done by the “Source File” column which always carries the name of the original file when needed and cannot be edited. Just don’t edit the name of the original file at the OS level or there will be a mismatch.

  • If the footage was truly interlace, then you would have seen the green dot in the 1080p/29.97 project as it wouldn’t have matched. In theory, mix and match will change the green dot on the fly, when the essence matches the project type. The only time this will not be the case is if while in the 1080p/29.97p project, there was a transcode. At that time, you get a long message about how it will change the media to the project type. Did something like that happen?

There was no mention of OpenEXR, DPX, or CinemaDNG at NAB, when asked, the only response was; “not in this release”. And since they cannot speak to features beyond the quarter boundary (end of June), there may be an update to that story come IBC.

In theory this would be done via AMA, and now that there is LUT support at the front-end of the process, at least related support for the frame-based formats is there. The concept of AMA is that the camera manufactures develop the plug-in for their camera, keeping Avid from having to do them all which is good, but in the case of open formats such as OpenEXR, DPX, and DNG, it ends up in no-man’s land as someone would do the work for everyone else to benefit from – even their competitors. It is in these open formats that I believe Avid should provide, but are now subject to engineering resources and prioritization.

  • I mentioned QTChange from VideoToolshed – it will take the creation date from the file and turn it into Time of Day timecode.

Maybe in this forum, but not in this thread. I just notice that in any forum, a free software solution is always better whether or not it meets one’s needs or not.
