  • Relinking ALE File to MXF files from Resolve

Posted by Dave Williams on July 28, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I really could use some guidance on relinking my ALE file that I have made from Resolve to the actual files in Avid Media Composer 5.5
I get the same message every time “Media Offline”. The file path is good and should find the files. They are the only MXF on my system.
    Somebody walk me through this…….please

For what its worth when it does say during linking that the media is offline it plays as if there is a file moving and the TC is correct for the Video that does not show up??

Are the MXF files in a numbered folder under the Avid MediaFiles->MXF directory structure? (i.e., Avid MediaFiles->MXF->1) And is the Avid MediaFiles directory at the root level of the drive you’re using? If so, MC should be making a database file in that folder when it starts up. Create a bin and drag the database file (it’s got an extension of .mdb) from the Finder window directly into the bin. All of your master clips should then show up in the bin. You don’t really need the ALE.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but what are the benefits of ALE compared to using AAF?
I finally got the hang of going from R3D>AMA>AAF>Resolve8>MXF>LINK
Now of course my next step is to finish editing in MC but still be able to go back to Resolve and re-link to original R3Ds (again but as the prev clips with Resolve nodes) and possibly export to DPX.
Am I driving the wrong way?

All of my files are yes in that structure. I will try this today. If I really don’t need an ALE that would help.

    Hello
Just so you know the original issue here was the settings for let’s say Alexa footage brought in to Resolve to be transcoded to MXFdnx 36 8bit then spit out to be sunk in AMC. Then delivered. Could you if possible send me your exact settings on the config page for the reel number issue and the exact setting you would use on the render page if possible? Once I know what these should be I think I will be fine. Right now the MXF I made is probably the wrong config and or wrong render settings are not showing up anywhere?? There in lies my problem.

If you didn’t set any of the settings in Timeline Conform Options for “Assist Using Reel Numbers From….”, then the MXF’s are being made without a tape name, which Avid will not like. DaVinci doesn’t make this particularly obvious, but the Timeline Conform Options actually control what tape name gets assigned when you drop a clip into the Media Pool. If you don’t select one, it won’t create one. Depending on your sources, you might want to use either Source Clip File Name coupled with an appropriate format string (the default one often works, and the format string options are explained in the User Manual) or Embedding in Source Clip File. Using the embedded reel name will give a full filename (without any extension) in the case of R3D files, and an abbreviated string for Alexa files. But each one should allow a proper conform as they’re both self contained. For any other file, I would probably use the source clip file name, as that should be unique and unambiguous.

Note that you must select these settings prior to dropping the clips in the Media Pool. After populating the Media Pool, you should see your selection reflected in the “Reel” column. If you don’t, start over, do some drugs, drink heavily, and ask again.

Did the drugs, and the drink but now I can’t see the screen to start over! lol

Thanks to Mike Post’s reply that helped me to fix this issue.

Depending on where you are in the workflow, the ALE will contain additional metadata such as ASC CDL values in a dailies workflow.

Open MediaTool, find clips and drag to bin. Resove adds “ceated by Resolve” in the comments field to make then easier to find. Select all, then merge the ALE file into the existing master clips to get the additional metadata.

    – How do you merge the ALE file into the existing master clips – I’m having a similar issue and can’t seem to fix it on my end.
